Hidden Caribbean histories revealed with help from MPNS

It is Black History Month. This Medicinal Plant Names Services newsletter describes our role in exploring how scientific knowledge of plants and their uses derived originally from African slaves and Indigenous peoples living and working in St Vincent's Botanical Garden, established in 1765.

The colonial authorities intended the Garden to provide healthcare for the military personnel stationed on St Vincent and at the outset the majority of the species grown were fruits or had local and commercial medicinal uses.

Follow this story in our newsletter and find links to an exhibition now on display in St Vincent and touring the UK.
