The Hidden Bias Holding Back Talent

Introduction

In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives. As a seasoned professional with years of experience in content marketing and digital strategy,

I've had the opportunity to observe firsthand how these platforms have evolved and impacted our society.

In this newsletter, I'll share my insights and observations on the current state of social media, the challenges it presents, and my predictions for its future.

The "Like Show"

One of the most striking patterns I've noticed on social media is the "Like Show." This refers to the tendency of individuals to engage with content that aligns with their personal beliefs or interests, often in the hope of gaining recognition or social status. While this behavior can be harmless, it can also contribute to the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes, such as ageism.

Patterns are emerging that play to the algorithm of social media platforms, resulting in older adults feeling marginalized and excluded. This ageism is not only harmful to individuals but also limits the diversity of perspectives on these platforms.

As someone who has been actively using social media for decades now, I have seen firsthand how this behavior has evolved and become more prevalent. It's concerning to see that instead of promoting inclusivity and diversity, these platforms are perpetuating discrimination based on age.

These patterns tend to promote regurgitated information preventing new ideas and perspectives from being shared. This not only hinders personal growth but also limits the potential for societal progress.

Furthermore, older adults have valuable experiences and knowledge to contribute to online discussions and communities.

It's disheartening to see them being overlooked or dismissed simply because of their age or ethnicity.

It's important for us as users of social media to be aware of these patterns and actively work towards breaking them.

We need to make a conscious effort to engage with diverse voices and amplify marginalized voices.

Let's use our platforms for good, by promoting inclusivity and diversity instead of perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

Let's create an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their age.

After all, isn't that what social media was intended for in the first place?

LinkedIn: A Job Board, Not a Business Network

LinkedIn, once a thriving platform for professional networking, has increasingly become a job board.

This shift has made it difficult for individuals, particularly those seeking to establish their personal brand, to stand out in the crowded marketplace.

16.2% of LinkedIn Users are Active Daily - that indicates LinkedIn is lagging in social effectiveness.

As a consultant and brand strategist, I've found that other platforms, such as YouTube and Twitter, offer more opportunities for personal growth and engagement.

I am biased because I have a brand strategy certification from Level C, Marty's education brand.

Level C

That's my shameless ego saying "I'm available, hire me".

The Rise of AI and the Dot-Com Bust

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to disrupt many industries, including the technology sector.

I believe that we are on the cusp of an AI-driven revolution that could lead to a consolidation of redundant services and a significant downturn in the tech industry, similar to the dot-com bust.

We are seeing the beginning of the AI bust. Massive layoffs in IT, and financial sustainability issues are reminiscent of the Dot-Com Bust.

Conclusion

As we navigate the complexities of the digital landscape, it's essential to remain adaptable and open-minded.

By understanding the challenges and opportunities presented by social media and emerging technologies, we can position ourselves for success in the years to come.
