A recent study by Opportunity Insights, a Harvard-based group, unveiled the admissions practices of elite colleges, particularly Ivy League institutions, and SAT scores' role in this process.
Wealth Over Merit? One in six students at Ivy League schools comes from the top 1% of the wealthiest families. Interestingly, these students don't necessarily have better grades but tend to have higher SAT scores. This raises the question: Are SAT scores a true reflection of merit or influenced by wealth and access to resources?
Richness as a Qualification: The study suggests that being extremely wealthy can be an advantage in selective college admissions. This is based on federal records from 1999 to 2015 and standardised test scores from 2001 to 2015.
SAT Scores and Admissions: While wealthy students generally have higher SAT scores, they are still overrepresented in admissions even after accounting for these scores. This indicates that other factors, such as legacy or athlete status, play a significant role.

Legacy and Athlete Preferences: Among students with similar test scores, colleges favoured children of alumni, recruited athletes, and those from private schools. This suggests that while SAT scores are important, they're not the only determining factor in admissions.
The Role of Elite Colleges: While less than 1% of American college students attend the 12 elite colleges studied, these institutions produce a significant portion of America's leaders. The study suggests that diversifying admissions could reshape the nation's leadership landscape.
Post-College Outcomes: Attending an elite college doesn't necessarily lead to higher income but does increase the likelihood of attending top graduate schools and working at prestigious firms.
Reactions and Responses: Several elite colleges have emphasised their commitment to increasing income diversity. Initiatives include offering free tuition for families below a certain income threshold, providing grants instead of loans, and recruiting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
However, this study by Opportunity Insights also highlights the challenges of changing the status quo. Legacy admissions, for instance, are complex due to the importance of maintaining solid alumni relationships.
The admissions practices of elite colleges play a crucial role in shaping America's leadership. SAT scores, while indicative of academic potential, are intertwined with socio-economic factors. As elite institutions strive for diversity, there's a need to reevaluate the weight given to SAT scores and other traditional metrics in the admissions process.
