Fredrik’s tips for boosting your career - part 2

Our co-founder Fredrik has been helping talents find their dream jobs for years. He’s here to share his insights to guide you in the right career direction. Here’s the second part of his step-by-step career school to boost your chances of landing an awesome job.

Career School Part 2: Clearly define what you’re really looking for?

In the previous part, we discussed the importance of continuously getting to know yourself better to understand where you truly belong in your work-life. Now, it’s time to take the next step: defining your career goals more clearly!

This might sound obvious, but after years of working as a recruiter, I’ve realized two things:

  1. Most candidates aren’t clear enough about what they want. They might have a vague idea, but it’s clear that many haven’t spent enough time reflecting on their true career preferences and goals.?
  2. As a recruiter, I highly value candidates who can clearly articulate what they’re looking for. When someone can express their preferences, ambitions, and self-awareness, it tells me they’ve thought deeply about their career path. I’m not expecting perfect answers, but when candidates pursue a job because it genuinely aligns with their interests and goals, they’re more likely to excel and be a better long-term fit for the company.?

Think about the industries, business stages, and roles that truly align with your strengths, passions, and ambitions. Are there specific companies you dream of working for, either now or in the future? Any locations you’ve always wanted to move to? By clearly documenting what you’re looking for in your career, you’ll find it easier to navigate the job market and apply to roles that are genuinely right for you.?

Exercises:?

  1. Document your career preferences: Set a timer and quickly jot down your preferences, including:?
  2. Write a fictive job ad for your dream job: Use AI tools to help craft a personalized job ad that encapsulates your ideal role. Here’s a prompt you can use: Prompt: "Create a job ad for my dream job that includes the following details: [insert your preferred industries, roles, work tasks, company size, company stage, location, workplace type, cultural traits, and any specific perks or benefits you value]. Highlight the work tasks, company culture, and career growth opportunities that align with my goals." This exercise helps anchor in your mind what you’re looking for, and believe it or not, these opportunities might just start appearing. ?
  3. Sign up at HiCareer.com: Add your work preferences to your profile. We’ll scan the job market and share personalized matches that align with your experience and preferences, helping you find the right job faster.?
