Max walked into the conference room feeling the familiar tightness in his chest, the dread that accompanied each Monday meeting. It was like stepping into a sterile ward where creativity was checked at the door, and compliance took center stage. He thought of McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest—the rebellious spark challenging authority and inspiring others to reclaim their humanity. But today, Max felt weary of resistance.

Seated at the long table, Max's gaze drifted to his phone, where a notification flashed: a daily quote from Atisha's Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment—"Whatever you do, do it with a mind imbued with compassion."

He exhaled slowly. Compassion felt distant amidst corporate politics, yet the words lingered, nudging him toward empathy rather than defiance.

As discussions unfolded—filled with tense debates and veiled criticisms—Max began to observe his colleagues differently. Beneath their posturing and guarded comments, he saw their fears, ambitions, and vulnerabilities. Each person was navigating their own internal ward, fighting unseen battles.

When a heated disagreement arose, Max cleared his throat. "I think we're all aiming for the same thing," he began gently, his voice surprising even himself. "Maybe our approaches differ, but can we discuss this openly, with a bit more empathy?"

The room fell quiet. A few uncomfortable seconds passed, then heads nodded, expressions softened, and conversation resumed, more genuine this time.

As the meeting adjourned, a colleague approached him. "Thanks for speaking up, Max. It changed the mood."

Walking out, Max felt lighter. He hadn't toppled a tyrant like McMurphy or escaped the system. Instead, he'd lit a small lamp, guiding himself—and maybe others—towards a path of understanding, illuminating a way through the chaos, one compassionate step at a time.
