HGinSIGHT June

From the Editor

Recently I was asked to join an expert panel to speak on the future of work, workforce development and leadership development – all things workforce basically – and you can find an edited version of an interview I gave in this month’s newsletter.

I do not profess to be an expert but for many years I have been fortunate to work across systems and indeed countries to have a pretty good feel for domestic and global workforce trends and the things that do and do not make a difference.

What I do know is we live in an increasingly complex world and long gone are the days IQ is the superpower leaders need to be effective today, let alone tomorrow. Sure, that might get you your first leadership role but unless you have gone on to develop EQ and AQ it really is game over.

EQ and AQ might be found in lecture theatres, as theory, but it will not stick in the workplace. That requires the creation of psychologically safe spaces for leaders to develop EQ and AQ by testing, doing and reviewing. Where you will find that is in Action Learning Sets and programs underpinned by this evidence based methodology.

The other thing I know to be true is that as soon as we turn the leadership development tap off to save money, and it is happening again right now, we go backwards. It never ceases to amaze me that systems happily eviscerate leadership pipeline by not investing in it and then sit around and bemoan the fact the talent cupboard is bare.

Thank goodness there are system champions who resist that, like the great leaders who have partnered with us to launch our inaugural Next Generation Executive Program, to prepare mid level managers to successfully, and safely, transition to their first executive level appointment. As always please enjoy great reading.

Until next time, mā te wā.
