HGinSIGHT April 2023

The community sector is diverse, deep and comes in all shapes and sizes and that can often lead to misunderstanding by government as to its true value, the intricacies of its cross sectoral work and the capability of its workforce.
Having worked for a community organisation from its very humble beginnings to becoming one of the country’s largest providers of mental health, housing and employment services I experienced firsthand how challenging it could be to address the issue of value, particularly as it related to appropriate levels of service funding.
Throughout the pandemic we heard repeatedly about the frontline but the truth is there isn’t one. There are many and the community sector is often at the front of the front lines. As to its value? This question would have me silently screaming in contract negotiations. I used to say to myself?wait until it’s eroded or not there, then it will become apparent real fast!
Community organisations are facing?increasing demand for their services among rising levels of poverty and disadvantage. Demand in some ways is easier to address but people are also presenting with far more complex needs and it is the combination of the two that is proving infinitely more challenging.
In this month’s newsletter we hear from two inspirational community sector leaders, Sally Dalhousie with The Fono in New Zealand and Paul Ostrowski with the Care Connect Group in Australia, both of whom are part of our Executive Learning Set community.
As always you will also find a diverse range of leadership roles we are bringing to the market, either in this month’s newsletter or on our website.
Until next time, Mā te wā
