HG Transportation is looking for a new colleague
Jan Franta
Technical Director - Transportation at Harrison Grierson / Lead - Transport Team at LEAD Alliance
When I joined Harrison Grierson Transportation team, there were just six people, of which three decided to pursue their career at a different place shortly afterwards.?That was a year ago, and despite challenges we have not just made it through, we have thrived. ?The team now has ten people who are absolute pleasure to work with, and two more are starting in the next few weeks. It's been a while since I enjoyed a job this much, and here are some reasons why:
Small team in a large company. The traffic team has only twelve people and feels like a family, but we have the backing of whole Harrison Grierson.?HG employs over 300 staff all over New Zealand and is a big player in the land development space.?We get involved in some remarkable multi-disciplinary projects all over New Zealand, with many unique problems for us to solve.? It works the other way, too: we get assistance from other disciplines if needed, learning things outside our core area and providing clients with one-stop-shop service.
Flat structure. Everyone gets involved based on their abilities and not seniority to get the job done. ?There are no pure project managers in the team; everyone has engineering background and is actively practising, so keeping up to speed with the latest development in the industry. ?We encourage discussion in the team, and I value when a junior member questions my decisions.
Healthy hierarchy. The team is neither top nor bottom heavy. ?Top-heaviness stifles peoples' career growth, whereas bottom-heaviness leads to junior staff not getting enough support from more skilled colleagues. ?We make sure there is always someone ready to help when needed.
My work gets appreciated. Not taken for granted.
Client exposure. There are few things that I find more frustrating and demotivating than working on a piece of work the purpose of which was never explained to me, which then disappears in the system and no feedback is ever received. ?We want people exposed to the entire project cycle and see the whole picture. ?We take junior staff to meetings and get them involved with clients and design teams, so that they are soon ready to run their own projects. ?That brings me on to the next point.
Challenge and grow people. I believe that most people are way more capable than they seem, but they must be given the right opportunity (or perhaps push). Sadly, a lot of companies take too cautious an approach, inadvertently wasting great talent.
My first boss was the opposite extreme. I vividly remember the day when I - still just an intern - came to work, only to be sent back home for my passport and flown to Sofia, Bulgaria, for a few days to assist our American client in negotiations with the local design team and authorities. ?Unfortunately, we don't regularly send people to business trips abroad. However, we encourage people to get into areas they have not been exposed to before, expand their skills and manage and front their own projects.
Support & training.?I can’t stress how important giving the right support to people is to allow them grow and become confident engineers.?This includes not only structured training organised by the company, but also - even more importantly - learning on the job.?The team’s flat structure and healthy hierarchy means there is always someone experienced ready to help and provide guidance on all types of projects.?A range of training is provided internally and externally, often in a light-hearted manner.?
Great mix of projects. We have several sources of work that give us a steady stream projects, quite different in nature. This not only brings a lot of variety to our work, but also allow us to deliver more efficient solutions to our clients because we are aware of the different expectations of each group. Some examples are at the bottom of this article.
Does this sound good to you?
We are constantly looking to expand out team with the right people, currently looking for an experienced Civil3D-capable engineer.
