HFC's will be in short supply
ESCO Institute-HVAC Excellence
Setting standards for the HVACR and building science industries.
The AIM Act, which was included in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021, directs EPA to phase down production and consumption of HFCs in the United States by 85 percent over the next 15 years. A global HFC phasedown is expected to avoid up to 0.5° Celsius of global warming by 2100.
This final rule is the first regulation under the AIM Act to address HFCs, which are greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigerators, air conditioners, and other applications. This final rule sets the HFC production and consumption baseline levels from which reductions will be made, establishes an initial methodology for allocating and trading HFC allowances for 2022 and 2023, and creates a robust, agile, and innovative compliance and enforcement system
One factor that is difficult to properly calculate is the amount of reclamation gas available to the industry. In an ideal world ALL reclaimed refrigerant would be properly separated, identified and returned to a local collection point to be processed back into AHRI-700 certified product to be re-supplied back into the industry. Unfortunately this is not exactly the case in the field. Together, we discuss how YOUR choices in the field can impact not only the availability of HFC refrigerants for legacy systems, but the price as well. Kate Houghton of Hudson discusses HFC reclamation and phasedown LIVE tomorrow at 4:30 Eastern with us.
