Good and Bad Reasons to Get a Coaching Certification

I am often asked by aspiring coaches whether or not they should secure a coaching certification from a certifying body. I am then asked, if I say yes, to recommend an ideal coaching certification program.

When I get a question often, I usually write an answer so I can reply with an easy link and save me and the asker a 30-minute conversation.

Before I share my view on this, I want to disclose three things.

First, I am woefully unfamiliar with the general landscape of coaching certification programs. I know the basics, the largest players, the emergence of programs at well-regarded US colleges and universities, etc. But I do not have a feel for which certification is good or bad. I know little about pricing for these programs or program components. I’m not that interested in knowing all of this or doing the research, and this is always the first thing I say in response to the question, so there, I’ve said it.

A Transformational "Growth Hack" For High Performers

A year or so ago, I had the notion that it would be amazing to create a transformational personal and professional growth program to serve the highest performing non-executives inside great companies and organizations.

I’d just read the books Powerful and No Rules Rules, so I was obsessed with this idea of “keepers.” As defined at Netflix, a “keeper” is a 10x performer who you as a leader would fight hard to save if they said they were making a move.

I realized that I’d spent much of my life placing my attention on people just like this.

When I meet someone like this, I do everything I can to find a way to be a part of their life, as a friend, a team member, or just a close-in admirer. And, I felt certain that these people were being left out of really meaningful, game-changing programming to support their growth.

What’s to Love About Being in a Funk? Live Coaching with “Ryan" (Anonymous) - Ep. 49

Sue and Leah Pearlman Leah welcomed the first anonymous guest “Ryan” to the HeySue podcast! He kicked off the conversation by explaining that he is in the market for a coach who can help him get out of a funk.

Sue and Leah invited Ryan to reflect on different parts of himself – from the achievement-oriented “higher self” to the cheese-loving slacker “Gary.” Ryan’s curiosity and self-reflection shine through in this conversation that spans creativity, self-worth, quantified-self journaling, and Miyazaki’s Fujimoto from Ponyo.

This is a great listen for anyone (i.e. everyone) familiar with patterns of “productivity” and “laziness.” To go deeper, here is an exploration about how to allow yourself to rest.

If you want to explore Ryan’s pop culture references, listen to some Sufjan Stevens or watch the 1983 movie Wind in the Willows.

Is This Successful Serial CEO “Too Much?” Find out. Live Coaching with David Secunda - Ep. 48

David Secunda is a multi-win entrepreneur who has founded wide-ranging companies from workplace management software to adventure camps.

He is also someone whom I deeply admire. If you met Dave, you would have no idea that he’s successful or that he runs companies. You would only know that he has an enormous heart and a smile that warms the area around his body by a few degrees. When I look around my network for people who set an example for me in how I carry myself in the world, Dave is the highest bar I can find. He shows up for people. He takes time to appreciate things he likes. He has designed his life around holding community generously. In my Jewish lineage, he’s called a mensch.

Dave also has an avid growth mindset for himself. He wants to be a better man, and that is the thing that strikes me as most evident in this episode of the HeySue podcast. Dave reached out to Leah and me and asked to do the podcast! And he brings so much insight about leadership and humanity that it’s well worth 45 minutes of your time.

And yes, we talk all about "Tiny" -- the persona who desperately wants to keep David safe... and definitely did not want David to do live coaching for a podcast!

I hope you will listen. And I hope you share your reaction with me and others here.

If you like this ep, listen to a few others. I think the way people have shown up in this context has been stellar. If you really like it, tell a friend, write a review of the podcast, or forward this email.

If you or someone you know would like to be coached by Leah and me on the pod, hit me up.

Facts, Stories, Shame, and a Continous Glucose Monitor (CGM)

I have inherited chronic kidney disease, and, as such, I get routine blood tests to measure my kidney function. It’s a normal blood panel, and so glucose is also covered.

A few weeks ago, I did some blood work, and my glucose was 120. That’s not great, but it’s not crazy. I learned after my nephrologist asked me about it that I’m supposed to fast ahead of these blood draws, so it made sense that my number was high, but he wanted me to do the more sophisticated A1C blood test to assess whether I was pre-diabetic or worse. I did the test. My fasting glucose was 74 (hurrah!), and my A1C was 5.5, which is on the high side of normal, but not wildly alarming.

My primary doctor thought it would make sense given the A1C for me to go on a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for 10 days so I could see the trends and effects of my diet, fitness, and other behaviors. Sure. CGM’s are all the rage in the “healthspan” universe, and I was game to learn. Plus, I knew that, although my BMI is normal and my eating habits are pretty good, I do sneak some popcorn and an occasional fun size bag of M&Ms into my days.
