Hey Shrink #9: And yet...

Extending Invitations to Experience and Engage with Who and What Matters to You
"The best is yet to be." - Robert Browning
Are you there, yet?
Mindsets. Dr. Carol Dweck offered us informative and inspiring work on the growth mindset and overcoming a fixed mindset. Our mindsets determine how we handle failure, stick with a performance or task, and how we learn. If you are unfamiliar with her work, read a summary here.
3-Letter Word. In this newsletter I offer you one powerful 3-letter word that can powerfully pull you out of a self-limiting view of what you can or cannot do and into a perspective of potential growth.
That word is: YET.
Effort and process. When you feel limited or constrained by thinking or saying something like, "I am no good at learning Portuguese." Try adding yet at the end of your declaration, as in "I am no good at learning Portuguese, yet." Yet opens up possibility and a future of learning and change. Yet offers us a non-inevitability perspective, encourages future effort, and ties us more to process than outcome.
"Just the word yet, or not yet, we're finding gives kids greater confidence, gives them a path into the future that creates greater persistence and we can also change people's mindsets." - Carol Dweck

No Yetis, many 'Yets'. I have never seen a YETI but I also have seldom seen where inserting a "yet" at the end of a thought or sentence doesn't remove the sense of limiting hopelessness and defeat.
In conclusion, here is a sick "dad"-tweak of the famous line from Star Wars:
"May the YET be with you."

2 年So good David. I love the simple guidance to possibility that "yet" offers. There's one other phrase that I love almost as much is, "Bye, for now." My sister-in-law, Annette Benda Fox, always says this at the end of our phone calls. It fills me with a sense of continuation rather than the finality of a good-bye. I use it now too. Not many others use it...yet.
David Zinger, such a small yet powerful word. Goes nicely with 'when' and 'aim'.
