Hey Gab, why are my people disengaged?
If you experience disengagement, I can also promise you a lack of direction. I am asked regularly, “Bob, the Builder” on my team, is underperforming. Should I fire him?” It’s easy to say, “Hire slow, fire fast,” but is that the right thing to do?
The disengagement could be a result of a lack of training or coaching.
Side note… +$1 million questions you can ask to clarify if you are dealing with training needs or coaching needs.
“Are you not doing XYZ because you don’t know HOW TO, or don’t WANT TO? “
You can use this question in most scenarios.
Like… Getting people to fill a report, showing up on time, achieving revenue goals etc.
Imagine arriving late to a meeting, and you are asked. “Are you showing up late because you don’t know how to or don’t want to?” The question forces people to take personal responsibility. That’s a conversation for a later date.
How to? - The need is Training…. “Can you teach me?”

Want to? - The need is Coaching… “Can you show me?”
A statement I’ve said for years…. “Many companies are trying to fix a WANT TO problem with a HOW-TO solution.”
More TRAINING is often not the solution. COACHING is the solution for a WANT TO problem.
Back to my original case study, “Should I fire Bob, the Builder?” Bob, the building, most likely doesn’t feel important in his current role. Your mission is to discover what Bob the Builder zone of genius. We all have undeveloped gifts, abilities, and talents. As Bob the building discovers his genius, you will see a genuinely engaged individual.
That’s one of the reason reasons why leadership development is so important.
Organizations are losing great people because of a lack of leadership.
If you have someone on your team who is disengaged, ask yourself. “Have we clearly defined the direction of the relationship?” Can you clearly explain to me their goals? At least 90% of the time, people know how to answer that simple question. I am not sure of their dreams.
Well…You just clarified step 1. Ask Bob the builder about his dreams.
