?? Hey Figma, Did you Pay for that Design?
Hello Tuners,
From Web Scraping to Solutions Against Web Scrapers, this week was one that caught my interest the most! As a content creator myself, I am always worried about staying relevant in the age of AI, which just becomes worse with Company’s dishonestly training their models on IP.
Join me as I talk about the repercussions of Perplexity and Figma blatantly stealing ideas, designs and content from unwilling sources, and wrapping it under fancy UIs and selling it to the masses. We also take a look at Cloudflare’s upcoming potential solutions to such web scrapers!
Perplexity Perplexed as Investors forced to lead Investigation
Developing on the acquisitions thrown by Forbes last week, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched an investigation into Perplexity AI, an AI search startup, for potentially violating AWS rules by scraping websites that have prohibited such actions. The probe was initiated after a WIRED inquiry revealed Perplexity's reliance on content from websites that explicitly forbade access through the Robots Exclusion Protocol, a widely used but non-legally binding web standard.
Perplexity, notably backed by Jeff Bezos' family fund and Nvidia, has faced accusations of scraping abuse and plagiarism. Forbes and Condé Nast have reported unauthorized crawling by Perplexity, using an unpublished IP address hosted on AWS infrastructure. AWS spokesperson Patrick Neighorn confirmed the investigation, emphasizing that AWS customers must adhere to robots.txt standards and are responsible for complying with terms of service that prohibit abusive activities.
Amazon’s AI Heist: Adept Agents Jump Ship!
Adept, an AI startup known for developing agents that perform various software tasks, has licensed its technology to Amazon. Adept co-founders David Luan, Augustus Odena, Maxwell Nye, Erich Elsen, Kelsey Szot, and several employees will join Amazon. Zach Brock, Adept's head of engineering, will take over as CEO.
Amazon's move aims to enhance its generative AI capabilities by integrating Adept's expertise and technology. David Luan and his team will work under Rohit Prasad, the former Alexa head, now leading Amazon's AGI team. This acquisition aligns with Amazon's strategy to build digital agents capable of automating software workflows, leveraging Adept’s advanced multimodal foundational models and agentic AI solutions.
Hey Figma, Did you Pay for that Design?
Figma CEO Dylan Field announced the temporary suspension of its 'Make Design' AI feature following accusations of replicating Apple’s Weather app designs. Andy Allen, founder of NotBoring Software, highlighted the issue, stating the tool heavily mirrored existing apps. Introduced at Figma’s Config conference, the feature generates UI layouts and components based on text prompts, aiming to aid developers in rapid design exploration without training on specific app designs.
The controversy underscores challenges in AI-driven design tools, emphasizing concerns over originality and quality assurance. Despite Figma’s clarification that the tool wasn’t trained on Figma content or community files, the incident highlights the need for rigorous testing and oversight in deploying AI features in competitive software environments.
Cloudflare takes Arms Against Scrapers
Amid a rather bad week for good honest content creators online, where illegal or rather dishonest scraping accusations against Perplexity and Figma are coming to light, Cloudflare, leading Cloud Service Provider, comes out with a new tool to fend of these dishonest Bot-based scraping tools, who are working day and night to hallucina.. sorry generate content.
Cloudflare has enhanced its automatic bot detection by analyzing AI bot and crawler behavior to improve accuracy. The updated models now scrutinize whether bots mimic human web browsing to evade detection. When detected, Cloudflare flags such evasive bots based on distinctive fingerprints and provides a reporting form for hosts to identify and blacklist them manually.
LLM Of The Week
Gemma 2
Earlier this year, Gemma introduced a suite of lightweight, open models aimed at democratizing AI tools. Now, Gemma 2 has been officially launched, featuring 9 billion and 27 billion parameter sizes. These models, integrated with partners like Hugging Face and NVIDIA, promise improved efficiency and performance for AI tasks, accessible even on consumer-grade hardware and reducing deployment costs significantly.
Gemma 2 boasts a redesigned architecture optimized for both performance and inference efficiency. The 27B model stands out with top-tier performance comparable to much larger models, making it feasible for cost-effective deployments on Google Cloud TPUs and NVIDIA GPUs. This advancement marks a significant step toward democratizing AI capabilities across various computing platforms.

LongRAG: Enhancing Retrieval-Augmented Generation with Long-context LLMs
LongRAG, a new approach that combines Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with long-context large language models (LLMs), aims to enhance system performance significantly. By using a long retriever, LongRAG reduces the number of extracted units by operating on longer retrieval units, while the long reader leverages the zero-shot answer extraction capabilities of long-context LLMs.
This method has achieved impressive results, claiming 64.3% on HotpotQA (full-wiki), which is on par with the state-of-the-art models. According to the paper, "The improvement in retriever can significantly benefit the reader model. By exploiting the long-context understanding ability of GPT-4o, LongRAG can achieve an EM of 62% on NQ and 64% on HotpotQA. These results could be comparable to the strongest finetuned RAG models like Atlas and MDR."
