Hey, Copilot! How can you help?

Revolutionizing industries with generative AI

Imagine having an invaluable assistant by your side, wherever you are, guiding you through complex tasks like writing and optimizing code for machines, and troubleshooting errors. That's exactly what Siemens Industrial Copilot does for software engineers or shopfloor operators.??

The purpose of the Siemens Industrial Copilot is to support and augment users by bringing human-machine collaboration to the next level and making interaction easier and more effective. Maintenance staff can chat in natural language with a faulty machine’s Copilot, for example, asking for details and discussing solutions for the problem as if they were discussing them with colleagues.??

Furthermore, to help address the shortage of skilled workers, the focus is on automating tedious, repetitive tasks. For instance, a lot of automation code is standard code that is repeatedly used but needs to be programmed from scratch each time, resulting in wasted time. Siemens Industrial Copilot can not only replicate an automation code as many times as necessary in a matter of seconds but can also minimize bugs. By utilizing the AI-based assistant, programmers can concentrate on that which truly makes a difference. And if you're thinking this is all still a vision - not by a long shot. We recently presented the first generative AI-based product for engineering in the industrial environment at Hannover Messe 2024 .?

“This has the potential to revolutionize the way companies design, develop, manufacture, and operate”, says Roland Busch , CEO of Siemens AG.” Making human-machine collaboration more widely available allows engineers to accelerate code development, increase innovation, and tackle skilled labor shortages.”

Already, the potential is being recognized. Take 舍弗勒 , a leading automotive supplier, which is among the first in the automotive industry to embrace generative AI in operations and the engineering phase. This helps its engineers to generate reliable code for programming industrial automation systems such as robots. In addition, the company intends to incorporate the Siemens Industrial Copilot during their own operations, aiming to significantly reduce their downtimes, and also for their clients at a later stage.

At Hannover Messe 2024, we showcased how the Siemens Industrial Copilot for Engineering is now seamlessly connected to the engineering framework Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal. The Industrial Engineering Copilot TIA Essential will be available for download from the Siemens Xcelerator marketplace in summer 2024. Features include automated code generation in structured control language (SCL): The TIA Portal can take the code suggestion directly from the AI, eliminating the need to copy and paste. It’s also possible for the Siemens Industrial Copilot to explain SCL code blocks or to guide and easily create an initial machine or plant visualization in WinCC Unified. In addition, engineering teams can search Siemens manuals in natural language. Customers will have the option to access their private instance of Azure OpenAI Service which doesn’t use customer data to retrain models.?

Indeed, for security, data protection and reliability, the Siemens Industrial Copilot includes the automation and process simulation information of Siemens' digital business platform Siemens Xcelerator and is enriched with the large language models of Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.?

“Siemens makes automation easy. The Siemens Industrial Copilot is bringing industrial generative AI to the shopfloor and will be an indispensable part of the engineering process in the future. With the easy and seamless connection to our TIA Portal, we’re the first to offer a generative AI product for engineering to industrial companies worldwide,” says Rainer Brehm , CEO Factory Automation at Siemens Digital Industries. “Industrial AI is an important lever for combining the real and the digital worlds – with the ultimate goal of addressing major challenges, such as the shortage of skilled workers or making industrial production more efficient and sustainable.”?

Siemens Industrial Copilot exemplifies how partnerships and strong ecosystems can lead to transformative solutions and sustainable growth potential. “Together with Microsoft, our shared vision is to empower customers with the adoption of generative AI,” says Roland Busch. In a deeper dialogue with Nadella,?they characterize?their joint efforts as a “virtuous cycle” that fosters both innovation and sustainability. To dive into the insights from Roland Busch and Satya Nadella on this transformative collaboration, we encourage you to watch the full conversation.

Importantly, the Siemens Industrial Copilot isn't standalone; we envision a suite of generative-AI-powered Industrial Copilots across the entire value chain. As Rainer Brehm alludes to, this exemplifies Siemens' ambitious digital strategy to merge the real and digital worlds. Since the 1970s, Industrial AI – that which is reliable, secure, and trustworthy AI – has been leveraged as part of this strategy. Its application in dynamic data center cooling management, for example, is?enhancing data center operations? and increasing their energy efficiency at the push of the button. AI-enabled applications, platforms and connectivity are making smart buildings smarter and AI-powered automation is revolutionizing how transport becomes more?flexible, efficient and inclusive. All of this represents a continued step towards the industrial metaverse , revolutionizing the manufacturing landscape and beyond through direct human-technology interaction.?
