What is a fertility leave policy?

Going through fertility treatment is often an emotionally taxing process. It requires multiple consultations, doctors visits and can take a toll on an individual’s mental and physical health. As a result, employees often need to take time off work.?

However, in the UK, there is no legal right to take time off work for IVF treatment or related sickness and therefore the absence is treated the same as any other sick leave.

With 1 in 7 couples now struggling with fertility and the rates of infertility increasing, many employers are looking to prioritise and introduce more specific workplace policies and guidelines to protect those going through fertility treatment. This has taken the form of a fertility leave policy.?

A fertility leave policy enables employees and partners to take a specified number of days off work for coping with fertility treatment.?

Usually, the person undergoing treatment is eligible for 5-8 days of leave to both receive and recover from treatment. Partners are also eligible for 2 days to provide support, a role which is also taxing.?
