HerSpace Newsletter: February

Note From The Team

This February, we are acknowledging Black History Month. A month-long observance originating in the United States and now being recognized in many countries across the world. Black History Month reminds us to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of Black people across the world, from their work in spearheading and amplifying impactful movements in gender equality and LGBTQIA+ community, to advancement in science, sports, culture, healthcare and education, amongst others.

This month is also LGBTQIA+ History Month, where we also recognize and celebrate the queer community. Whilst we celebrate both important observances, we are also taking this time to reflect at the history of systemic, social and structural inequities, oppression and injustices that continues to exist today in Norway, the Nordics and across the world. We cannot overstate the lasting impact that institutional, social and interpersonal discrimination continues to have on these communities.

While there is still much work to be done, history has shown us what the power of resistance can achieve, whether in the case of Stonewall Uprising, Black Lives Matter or the murder of Benjamin Hermansen in Oslo.

So, we ask you: call out racism, anti-blackness, homophobia, transphobia and any discriminatory behaviours when you see it. Have difficult conversations beyond Black History Month and LGBTQIA+ Month. Reflect on your own biases. Learn, unlearn and re-learn, and intentionally practice active and ongoing allyship.

At HerSpace, we will continue to learn, push the envelope in our work towards true inclusion, strive to create safer spaces for all people, including Black people, the LGBTQIA+ community,?underrepresented and marginalised groups and people of the global majority. We remain committed to leaning into the uncomfortable conversations.

In this regard, our Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace discussion in February will focus on Anti-Racism and Anti-Blackness – where we will unpack the importance of not only being a non-racist, but also the necessity of being anti-racist. We hope you join us!

This month, we have put together an interesting line-up of events. As our 6-month long inaugural HER|Tech Incubator for women-led companies soon nears its close in March, we have organised a Pitch Day in partnership with blinQ AS , an organisation that has begun its journey to actively work to support women and diversity in the technology space. We invite you to join us on February 17th

In addition, we have a Reflect and Align workshop with Mayce Dagdoni , Woman in Leadership session with Meryn Zumbo Willetts Willetts, CEO of Umbrella, and of course our monthly Community Lunch and Sister Circle for Black, Brown and Women of Colour.

We hope to see you at one or all of our events!

With Love,

The HerSpace Team
