The Hero's Journey

The Hero's Journey

Many popular stories including The Lord of the Rings, Mulan, and Hunger Games follow what’s called a Hero’s journey.?

There are many components to it, but these are the six that really stick out to me:?

  1. The Call to Adventure: a hero receives an invitation or challenge to leave their ordinary world.?
  2. Crossing the First Threshold: the hero leaves the familiar world and enters the unknown.?
  3. Road of Trials: the hero faces significant challenge in the form of tests and enemies.?
  4. The Ultimate Boon: the hero gains what they sought.?
  5. The Crossing of the Return Threshold: the hero returns to their ordinary world, transformed by their experiences.?
  6. Freedom to live: The hero attains a sense of freedom and can live without fear of the future.?

The hero’s journey resonates so widely because nearly everyone can relate to it.?

We’re all on our own hero’s journey in some shape or form?—?called to leave our ordinary world in order to achieve something greater.?

It can be incredibly helpful to contextualize our pursuits in the context of the hero’s journey.?

They’re supposed to be difficult.?

Difficulty and adversity simply means we’re in the thick of it.?

All of the latter stuff: the transforming, the attainment of what they sought, and the overcoming of fear are all byproducts of the decision to persist.?
