Heroic ILS practitioner comes to the rescue of a traffic officer

This is altruism in action! Life Health Solutions Business Manager and Intermediate Life Support (ILS) practitioner – Jade Hanekom – emerged as a hero after coming to the aid of a traffic officer involved in a serious car accident.

Onlookers were left in awe as Jade acted swiftly to rescue the injured officer from the wreckage of an accident, which occurred in morning peak traffic in the South of Johannesburg earlier this month. The traffic officer was on duty when his vehicle collided with another vehicle and crashed into an embankment. Three people were treated at the scene, including the officer who was badly injured.

The busy highway was closed as the emergency services waited for the helicopter to arrive.

Being the first paramedic to arrive on the scene, alongside bystanders, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and nurses just moments after the accident, Jade's instincts kicked in, and she immediately shifted into action. She assessed the situation and navigated her way through the debris of shattered glass to reach the officer's side. "I could see the officer lying across from the embankment, and I knew I had to act fast," recounted Jade. Several emergency services soon responded to the call, including ambulances from Emer-G-Med, ER24, and Netcare 911. The ambulance services attended to the two other casualties while Jade tended to the critically injured officer. Jade and the SAPS worked together to stabilise the officer, trying to control the bleeding and immobilising him as much as possible to avoid unnecessary movement and further trauma.

At this point, it was determined that the officer needed to be flown to the hospital, and the highway was closed as the emergency services waited for the helicopter to arrive. Thanks to Jade’s heroic efforts and the swift response of the emergency services, the wounded officer was treated from the wreckage and transported to the nearest hospital for further treatment. As of the time of publication, the officer was critical but stable in the hospital.

As news of this story continues to spread, Jade remains modest in the spotlight and emphasises the importance of teamwork in times of crisis. "What was achieved, I couldn't have done without the support and the cooperation of the emergency responders, even though not all of us knew each other", remarked Jade, humbly acknowledging the collaborative effort that played a pivotal role in the successful rescue. ?Her actions serve as a shining reminder of the empathy, courage and dedication exhibited by all paramedics and emergency responders in our country who put their lives on the line every day to save others.

Jade, our sincere gratitude goes to you and the emergency responders for your unwavering altruism and meaningful contribution on this fateful day.
