Here's Why Your Awesome Experience Isn't Enough To Land A Job In 2023

Here's Why Your Awesome Experience Isn't Enough To Land A Job In 2023

You probably have great experience. But are you still struggling to find your next job, despite your great experience?

Great experience is a start ... but it's not enough for you to find your next job fast, especially if you're looking for a good job with a career path, good salary, where you'll learn new skills, have new challenges, find a mentor, and have a good work/life balance.

It's also not enough when you have more difficult job search problems, like you're age 40+, unemployed, need to find a?job fast, struggling to get past ATSs,?career/industry/product/geographic change,?seeking raise/promotion,?remote positions, "bouncy" recent career path, job search turnaround, industry in decline/consolidation, long term gaps, family leave, or other of the most challenging job search issues. The issues that make your job search difficult appear as risks to most employers, causing you to get screened out for opportunities when you're qualified, not advance in the hiring process, or fail to get offers when you're a finalist - So you need to overcome and mitigate these risks.

Plus, you're facing a lot more qualified competitors than you realize, as 70M+ candidates compete for 9.9M jobs (7 times more candidates than jobs, when you also count currently employed job seekers). And the job market is slowing in advance of a recession ... while employers are still hiring, it's slowing.

Here are a few reasons you need more than awesome experience to land your next job fast in 2023:

  • Many Others Have Awesome Experience Also:?You haven't cornered the market on great experience. Today's job market is so competitive that hiring managers expect 5-10 times more qualified candidates than interview spots. If you just count unemployed job seekers there are 1.7 jobs for every job seeker (worker shortage), but when you also count the massive number of currently employed candidates, there's 7 times more job seekers than jobs (job shortages). Even with the high number of job openings, there are massive numbers of candidates competing for those jobs.
  • Great Experience Doesn't Make Your Resume Visible:?Many candidates with great experience fail to get their resume seen often, because they can't get through Applicant Tracking Systems (resume pre-screening databases). Experience isn't enough to get you through ATSs, to have your resume seen by a human.
  • Great Experience Doesn't Mean It Meets The Hiring Manager's Needs:?Hiring managers offer jobs to candidates that can solve their current individual problems. If you can't solve (or don't know) an individual hiring manager's priority problems, your great experience looks like the wrong experience for that hiring manager (no matter what's in the job description).
  • Job Descriptions Don't Describe A Hiring Manager's Current Needs:?Most job descriptions are standardized, generic, written by HR and Legal, so they can't represent the hiring manager's current needs. When hiring managers prepare their own job descriptions, they usually recycle them from the departing employee (rather than wait a month to get their job description approved by HR and the lawyers). Hiring managers would rather use an old job description, even one that doesn't include current needs, because they've got to hire a replacement quickly. When you rely on job descriptions, you're blind to the hiring manager's current needs, causing you to focus your resume around the wrong needs.
  • You're Not Doing More Than Other Candidates:?The candidates who win great jobs show employers they can/will do more, because they do more in their resume, interviews, and job search. Sending more resumes isn't doing more - it's doing the same thing over and over, hoping for different results.
