Here's why we enjoyed supporting the recent TeachMeet Icons English event
OUP Education
Welcome to Oxford, where everything we do is for the love of learning.
We were delighted to support the recent TeachMeet Icons English event. If you haven’t come across Teachmeeticons yet, this is a national teachmeet network providing free CPD for teachers in the UK. Their events are inclusive and friendly, organized by teachers for teachers, with the chance to attend in-person or watch online.
The TMI English event was held in Manchester on 24 September and there was an impressive line up of inspirational guest speakers sharing their expertise with colleagues.
The first keynote was with Chris Curtis on Rethinking non-fiction. Chris made the audience smile with his plea: “I don’t want five voices in English. I want hundreds, I want thousands. If you write a blog, tag me and I will retweet it!”
This was followed by three presentations in session 1: Sam Gibbs on Reclaiming English: why now is the time for genuine curriculum conversations; Anya Thomas on Schema-building in English; and Sarah Davies with It’s good to talk: encouraging the implementation of oracy skills in the English curriculum.
Session 2 included: Kate Pretsell on Improving writing at sentence level in the English classroom and beyond; Katie Shakeshaft on Explicit vocabulary instruction; and Helen Howel with Reimagining how students revise English.
It was good to hear Katie Shakeshaft talking about our Word Gap report and support, and how important it is to teach words both implicitly and explicitly for students’ understanding.
This was followed by the second keynote of the day with Andy Atherton' session on Retrieving aesthetically: making retrieval practice English-y. The audience loved how he took complex research and made it simple to apply in the classroom. As the TMI English team said: "We love your accessible, granular approach to teaching GCSE literature and language."
In session 3 we heard from: Donal Hale on Why a rich knowledge of grammar helps students develop literary analysis; Richard McDonald on Whole-class feedback in English; and Gaurav Dubay with Oracy in English: a curriculum, not a pedagogical, issue.
Gaurav’s school is taking part in our KS3 Oxford Smart Quest trial for English so we were especially pleased to meet him in person!
The final keynote was with Dr Haili Hughes with What would Freud say? Using a critical lens as a springboard for conceptualised answers in Macbeth. Haili told the audience: “I want my students to engage in these conversations which is why I don’t shy away from having high expectations for my students.”
Session 4 rounded off the day with presentations from: Elaine McNally on What’s done cannot be undone: reparative reading, Shakespeare and issues of race, migration, belonging and empire; Amy Smith on Teaching A Level Lit: finding a route through the text; and Laura Webb & Becky Jones with Improving analytical writing through high-level models.
As you can see, delegates are in for a real treat at these events with so many superb sessions and the recording is also available to watch on-demand.

Prem H. & Hayley Rogers were available all day, meeting teachers and offering support. Hayley presented an update on OUP Education English resources including: Word Gap; Get It Right! vocabulary workbooks by Helen Prince ; Rollercoasters; Super-Readables; Dictionaries; and Oxford Smart Curriculum. Prem really enjoyed talking to teachers about the exciting opportunity to trial Quest, our new KS3 Curriculum for English.
Prem's verdict on the day: "100% absolutely loved attending and supporting! The sessions were amazing! So good to see teachers sharing best practice and helping each other! Thank you Tom Rogers for always being the best host too!"
A huge well done to the TMI English team – Sarah Williams, Richard McDonald, Amy Smith and Rachel Boddy – who once again delivered a brilliant day, full of “sessions grounded in evidence, practical approaches and big ideas.” Thank you for having us.

Here are six reasons why we would recommend attending a TMI event: inclusive and friendly with a supportive atmosphere; organized by teachers for teachers, sharing tried and tested ideas to take back to the classroom; perfect for networking with colleagues in your subject area; great opportunity to keep up with the latest research; available in-person and online; plus, of course, they're free!
