Here’s Why Employees Roll Their Eyes at Staff Meetings

Here’s what your employees are thinking when they slouch, shake their head and roll their eyes at you in a staff meeting.
1. Alright if you really want everyone unhappy then you just keep having staff meetings where you do all the talking. We love being at your mercy with no consultation. You could at least entertain us with a ceremonial unfurling of the scroll. Maybe a trumpet. Oh wait, you have email now so you don’t have to look us in the eye.
2. Okay, it’s like they have no idea what goes on! When was the last time this eloquent doofus worked in a room with no windows?
3. When are they going to get to the point? Just give us the bad news already.
4. Oh my God that guy is going to make us miserable! How did he get promoted? He stomped on people while he smiled his way up the ladder. (Can you identify the Politician in your midst? Don’t confuse them for smooth Managers.)
5. How the heck are we supposed to do that? Are we going to lengthen the work day but administratively avoid paying overtime? Yay less time with my busy family! Not!
6. Yeah cuz free coffee is definitely going to help me forget that my work station is giving me lower back pain. How about, instead of relying on workman’s comp and insurance benefits that cover physical therapy, why don’t you create an incentive program with a free gym membership? After you buy me a new freakin chair! No cash? Then put some weight belts and lumbar supports on the company Amex! But thanks, 2 cream one sugar in my latte please. (I like to call this “Better than a Boot to the Head Management.”)
7. Oh goody, another tool we have to figure out for ourselves. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Okay, it’s YOUR risk. Clearly you are running this on prayer.
8. So you’re going to spend time and money on training me for a stop gap measure that will quickly be obsolete? Is your mess that big?
9. Soooo fewer resources and greater demand and scrutiny? Wheeee cut backs under duress!
10. Seriously? You want me to be more perky with customers while you reduce the quality of service? Duuuuuude. What are you guys smoking?
11. Ummmm ADDING administrative steps doesn’t really increase productivity. Streamlining is a thing people! Now we don’t have time to actually do the work for crying out loud!
12. Why are they bothering to ask our opinion? They don’t take us seriously. I’ve never seen solutions that contain our view point.
So there you have a few quick moments inside the mind of a jaded disappointed employee.
Beyond defined and regulated employee accommodation and rights, there is still so much that you can do as Managers and Executives to build a culture of mutual support and positive productivity. You really can rally the troops, even on a budget. Relationships break down when people repeat mistakes with no solutions on the horizon.
When you repeatedly remove hope for improvement, and eliminate faith in decision makers it’s time to take a thorough look at what kind of company you really want to build. When you devote your Policy Development and your Code of Ethics to Employee and Customer Retention it is amazing what can be achieved. The things you factor into your decisions are the difference between eye rolling and increased productivity.

9 年When I was still in corporate purgatory, I was the "bad" employee who would ask "Meeting? Will there be cookies?". I even remember telling one of my coworkers to swat me if I started to squeak my chair. She asked me to do the same if she snapped her gum. So few people know how to conduct a well run meeting that everyone feels is a good use of their time.
