Here's when authority marketing and social selling fails for consultants and service providers.

Marketing as a strategy bled out of corporate and into the mainstream before the pandemic. It became the promise of a brighter future for service providers who flooded online in 2020.

It came to LinkedIn from digital analytic types, content as king mavens, and social media influencer personality success stories. These people love the game of marketing.

The details of its birth matter less than knowing when it's not for you. Money flowed to those who cracked the code. Original creators often got hid underneath the veil.

Did you get caught in the content marketer matrix here on LinkedIn?

  1. Network across social media inboxes in pursuit of clients using all means of approaches to get people to know, like, and trust you.
  2. Build your influencer brand and become a professional-level content creator which includes learning how to write like a copywriter using complex approaches to get attention.
  3. Create a pipeline of prospective clients by getting them into your challenge, podcast, or event funnel and then make offers to them in hopes of closing business.

After a few years it became obvious that these approaches failed for me. You may have succeeded. Most who did teach them, but only a rare few profit from rather than sell it.

Why?

The average consultant and service provider doesn't like to create content, write marketing copy, or chase after clients.

Failure comes from complexity. When I worked for agencies, and still with my lead generation and sales outsourcing company, teams worked on clients accounts.

I've been in the service business for years. It takes serious time, effort, and adaptation to stay on top of rapidly changing trends in media, markets, and technology. That's why I left.

Here's the good news.

Original voices emerged from those who dropped the donut glazing practices of the how-to marketers. This represents what's next from my perspective and a massive gift for humanity.

How do you know the difference?

The originals don't talk about getting clients, becoming an authority, or success on social media. It's not relevant as being themselves leads to clients automatically.

It's not quite that simple, but it feels that way. Prosperity comes from finding your voice. It emerges from an inner journey. Take this route and watch the red ocean part in front of you.

The average service provider has little interest in becoming an original creator. They don't want to be marketers either. This may feel like being trapped in a box, but you can escape.

First, own your gift. If you want to support clients, analyze data, or build things. Get great. The journey starts with you not a client avatar. Your originality is in your tradecraft.

Authority personality, writing skills, and creation originality matter less for you than being an expert in your domain of expertise. Here's how to get clients. I'll share a few bullets below.

This graphic comes from the energetic map that underlies creation. It's less DISC, BANK, and MBTI than Gene Keys, Human Design, or Enneagram. Step in fresh snow. Skip personas.

  1. Nobody ever succeeded copying others. It's worse for consultants. You may be asked to be a magical creator or motivating power when you are nothing of the sort. That's a bad recipe.
  2. Create a peer or partner group. For me, I'm surrounded by supporting anchors and analyzing organizers. As a magical creator running all over the place and thinking it's hard to build stuff.
  3. Pay marketers to do the marketing. Hire a consultant and ignore the coaches. If you want to do it because you love it get coaching. That's rare for service providers but not unheard of.
  4. For those without budgets create a tight inner circle group. This is how I've done it. Work out deals with your people. Make sure you are clear but there is no need to get legal.
  5. Know that the beginning is difficult. Don't worry about metrics, goals, or timelines. Skip the persona, target client, and messaging exercises. The what, who, and why comes in action.

The new world not only dawns, but it's full sunlight today. Nobody needs to get stuck in place. Stop going to events, programs, or paying money for things that don't fit who you are.

The warning signs come when the leader has an answer about about how to get clients. The ones who get them are those selling how to get clients programs. Win before the first punch.

You don't need to learn how to network, social sell, or market beyond the basics. Drop the entire project, find yourself, and create a company and life that suits your needs only.
