Did you know November is also observed as World Vegan Month, amongst the other range of terms it is observed as? Whether you're a practising vegan or not, we have to admit there are several benefits associated with this lifestyle - for us and the planet!
A lot of us may be well-versed with the downside of eating red meat, but let's take a look at the history of eating meat. Humans have been avid meat consumers for as long as mankind has existed and it has been said that a meat-heavy diet has been instrumental in mankind's growth over the years. Cut to the current times, meat production has been said to be at an estimated?325 million metric tons!
While your diet is personal to you and your health conditions, here's an important statistic. According to the Worldwatch Institute, 51% of worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions can be attributed to animal agriculture raised and killed for food. While this mess needs to be cleaned up from the ground where the production of the meat takes place, every step in this process is associated with high amounts of carbon emissions.
This isn't a ruse on our part to guilt trip you into a plant-based diet! But it is important we're aware of the reality of various industries and the consequences they bring. Some simple ways we can get started on transitioning to this diet is by taking it one meal at a time. We can start with keeping a goal of having one vegan meal every 2-3 days and then slowly move up. Thanks to modern technology and innovation, there are loads of mock meat options and dairy alternatives out there. And when followed correctly, a plant-heavy diet can be highly nutritious and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
To take it up a notch, we can also try to be vegan in other areas of our lives like our consumption habits. Not sure where to start? We've got a few recommendations you can try out!

While a vegan diet is definitely a great way to take climate action, we're all on our own journey. Opting to go vegan in other areas of your lifestyle is also a great way to contribute to the fight against animal cruelty and also can help combat other problems the planet is facing like the garbage crisis, and chemicals in our oceans which make their way into our bodies again. At the end of the way, while we incrementally take steps to make the planet a better place, let's be supportive and help one another in this race to change climate change.
