Here’s What I Would Do If I Was Fired/Quit My Job TODAY

I’m no stranger to quitting a job or finding yourself with no income, plan, or strategy for making money in the future. Back in 2015, I quit my stable corporate job in NYC with zero idea what I was going to do – I just knew I could no longer work in an office setting.

Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say that quitting that job was the best thing I ever did. I know people are being let go from their jobs with no warning right now. I also know people are spontaneously quitting jobs they no longer feel align with their values or beliefs. So, if you find yourself in this boat right now, and are thinking to yourself, ‘what in the hell am I going to do,’ here is exactly what I would do if I quit (or was fired from) my job in 2023.

Step 1: Open a Fiverr profile

Yes, I would still get on Fiverr . Yes, I have been on it for nearly a decade, and yes, I still believe it’s the best place to get initial freelancing experience if you are brand new to the world of selling your services online.

You can listen virtually any service for sale on Fiverr. Not sure how to set up your profile or Fiverr gigs? Or how to price them? I wrote a book on this!

Is Fiverr a ‘perfect’ solution? Not at all. There are downright difficult clients (at times) on the platform, and I wouldn’t exactly call Fiverr a pro-freelancer place. But it’s a practical means to an end, a place where you can get immediate exposure, and a place where you can obtain invaluable freelancing experience for free.

My favorite feature of these freelancing platforms is that they are free to use – making them the best first step if you are new to the world of working for yourself.

Don’t forget to also check out Upwork , Legiit, Contra, and freelancing on LinkedIn.

Step 2: Take LinkedIn seriously

LinkedIn is no longer just for the corporate employees of the world – it’s an incredibly lucrative place for freelancers to connect with potential clients. Be sure to set up and optimize your LinkedIn Services Page (I made a YouTube covering how to do this) so that bigger clients with lofty budgets can find you and outsource a bulk of their work to your business.

Your profile is also an effective way to incorporate your keywords so these clients can find your services. Don’t forget about LinkedIn articles – the very thing you are reading right now!?

Step 3: Productize your knowledge

If lawyers, doctors, and accountants deserve payment for sharing their expertise on an hourly basis, why don’t you? Productizing your knowledge is one of the best ways to earn passive income (money in your sleep). For example, last night I earned $12 when someone bought one of my freelancing templates I list for sale on my website.

I also have online courses that I made in Google Slides (I know online courses come with a bad rep today – not all of them are bad – some people do mean well).

No matter what you were doing before quitting your job, there is something you know a lot about and should turn into an instant download. This could be a PDF, templates, an ebook, etc. Sure, it takes time setting up these products initially; but once they’re listed, you never have to touch them again!

Step 4: Save as much money as possible

I kept my head down, worked hard, and saved as much as I could my first two years working for myself. After 24-months, I had enough money to start investing in real estate. Although I waited a few more years before trying real estate (I felt very intimidated), once I got into it, it immediately paid off. I’ve made a LOT of real estate mistakes… yet somehow, I always end up in the green. They aren’t kidding when they say real estate is one of the best ways to develop wealth.

Again, this is just my personal experience – if you want to invest your money in other ways, go for it! With the pace of inflation, you must do SOMETHING with your saved money, or else it’ll lose value sitting in your bank accounts.

Step 5: Establish your online brand

I didn’t post on social media about my freelancing business for YEARS! I didn’t know what I wanted to say or if people would care. Boy was I wrong. Once you get a feel for running your own business online, start posting about it on your social media. Claim your internet brand. Nothing is more valuable than carving out your niche on social media and opening yourself up to potential brand partnerships, sponsorships, and affiliate programs.?

I recommend starting with Instagram and TikTok. Please don’t feel overwhelmed – if you want to wait a few years to do this, there is nothing wrong with that!?

The Gig Economy is Waiting

If you’re scared and panicked about your change in employment, know that you are not alone. Use this time to be proactive and explore what it is you’ve always wanted to do, turning it into a freelancing service you sell online. One thing will lead to another, and this recent job change may end up a divine blessing in disguise. I know it was for me!
