If your mortgage has been in forbearance, you’ve just been granted a bit of a reprieve. The Federal Housing Finance Authority announced on Thursday that it is extending the forbearance protection and foreclosure/eviction moratorium window through the end of January 2021. These protections were previously set to expire at the end of this month.
Borrowers have the option to extend their forbearance for up to a year, but it’s never too early to be in touch with your lender about your post-forbearance options, especially if you expect to still struggle to meet your payments once that protection ends.
The most important thing is to communicate with your mortgage servicer. Being upfront about your situation allows them to work with you to find the best solution. You’re much more likely to face an unpleasant situation — possibly even foreclosure — if you try to dodge the lender.
