By Danny McCarthy
South Side Signal dated July 17, 1897 spotlighted:
“(From {The Brooklyn Daily Times}.)
SUFFOLK COUNTY REAL ESTATE.
Some Recent Transfers.”
As I scrolled through the column of transfers having already typeset Bay House Orient as my keywords within the Suffolk Historic Newspapers website Search area, I was able to spot;
“ELISHA M. RACKETT, exr, to Cicero B. King,
Orient Bay House, Orient.”
South Side Signal dated July 23, 1887 included a tribute-like obituary:
????“Orient…E.M. Rackett, Local Editor
Salmon Merriman, proprietor of the Bay House, Orient, died suddenly on Friday evening, July 8. He complained of a pain in his stomach, and while his wife went for some medicines, he fell down the chair in which he was sitting and when picked up he was dead. Coroner H. D. Skinner held an inquest on Saturday morning. – Verdict: Death from natural causes.-Times.
The Long Island Traveler dated September 19, 1924 had something for you folks that really shouldn’t make you BORED! Southold Town Board had met in Greenport at Supervisor Tuthill’s home. “…??Ralph Eldredge of East Marion, who has operated a motor bus line between the villages of Orient. East Marion and Greenport for the past ten years, made application to operate his motor buses over the following highways in Southold Town: (1) The continuation of Main St., Greenport, between the northerly line of Greenport Village on Main St. and the main North Road. (2) The main North Road between its intersection with the continuation of Main St., Greenport and its intersection with Main St., Orient (3) Main St., Orient, between the main North Road and a point thereon opposite the Bay House, Orient.”
The Long Island Traveler dated August 10, 1939 included some “Guests Who Came To Dinner!”;
????“Mr. and Mrs. A?N. Rollins who were among our colonists last year, are stopping this year at the Bay House, Orient. Mr. Rollins was a nephew of the late Dr. Frank Rollins.”
The Long Island Traveler dated August 10, 1940 shared:
????“The Bay House, Orient Point Inn, and the Beach House connected with White Shingles were filled to capacity over the week end. {stet] - {Apparently that truly did mean that it was a strong end!}
