Last night we received a call that a foster home was needed for Lola, an 8-week old lab mix puppy. The woman who had bought her had intended the dog as a gift for her adult daughter. However, within moments of meeting the new dog, the daughter's face turned red and began to swell, her nose ran and her eyes dripped tears --severe allergy alert!
Fortunately, Lola is PERFECT for Healing4Heroes, the non-profit we serve as foster pet parents. We'll give Lola a good home for several months, along with potty training, leash training, basic obedience training and socialization to adults, other dogs and children of all ages. (It helps to have 7 grandchildren who LOVE dogs!) Then, she'll be introduced to a group of veterans who can pick her as their very own service dog FOR FREE!
Lola already has several characteristics that will make her a great service dog. She loves people, she listens well to commands, and she is curious and courageous. And she's SMART. In just 16 hours with us, she was coming when called, following when called, sitting when asked, and beginning to learn to "leave it" when she began tugging on our pants leg or nipping our fingers. She's also trusting that we're going to take good care of her. Lola has not allowed her trauma of having to leave her first home to make her unhappy. She's eager to explore her new world and make herself at home in it. She's a new mascot for our office and definitely is adding fun to our day.
Investors need some of the character traits as this puppy. Investors need to be courageous and curious to learn from their advisors about products and services that can help them --even those that are new to them. They need to be willing to trust when someone has earned it, and not trust when their gut tells them to beware. Investors also need to not view any downturn as a permanent disaster. The markets ups and downs will continue as long as we all are alive. To react with strong emotions to market conditions we have no control over is a waste of our time. Better to make sure you have a plan and a strategy that will provide assets and income throughout your life regardless of how the market performs.
