Financing the Transition: Supplementary Report on the Costs of Avoiding Deforestation

The Energy Transitions Commission has released a report on financing our much-needed transition away from deforestation.

It reports the economic costs of avoiding deforestation, estimating that we must allocate, on average,?$3.5 trillion every year, between now and 2050.

Already this decade, around $300 billion a year should be directed to low and middle-income countries.

But the funding directed to forest protection does not come close. At present, it totals only $2-3 billion US dollars per year.

The report suggests that financial incentives are needed. For instance, grant payments could support the phase out of coal, the reduction of deforestation and the development of carbon dioxide removal technologies.

Blaston Farm: Agriculture post-Brexit

Our Advisor and project partner, Hylton Murray-Philipson, was interviewed for the Daily Express. He discussed the challenges and opportunities of post-Brexit farming and his work at Blaston Farm on soil sequestration. He shared some insights on the best soil types of carbon capture:

The particular situation in which I find myself was heavily degraded clay soil and that happens to be the best situation for accessing carbon markets because clay soil can sequester much more carbon than light sandy soil."
