This week, the United Nations and people around the world marked the International Day of Non-Violence , which is observed annually to coincide with the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.?

“We commemorate not only the birth of Mahatma Gandhi but also the timeless values he championed: mutual respect and understanding, justice, and the power of peaceful action," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres .

In climate news, the World Meteorological Organization announced this week that the planet had experienced the hottest September ever documented – and by a record-breaking margin.

This continues an extended streak of extraordinary temperatures and is yet another sign of the need for urgent action to stem the dramatic impacts of the climate crisis .

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this week to Narges Mohammadi, for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all.?

And finally this week, in a historic vote on Haiti, the UN Security Council authorized the deployment of an international security mission to help the country’s national police address surging gang activity and rampant violence.

Insecurity in Haiti has resulted in widespread displacement, as well as high levels of hunger and child malnutrition, warns the World Food Programme . Among other areas of focus, the mission will help secure critical infrastructure and support the distribution of humanitarian aid.
