Here's a Key for Emerging and Seasoned Public Speakers
written by Tam L. (absent of a.i) lol
Stepping into the public sphere as a speaker means entering a realm where media attention—whether positive or negative—is a constant companion. The real challenge lies in whether speakers can authentically embody their on-stage personas off-stage. It's an intriguing dichotomy: the motivational speaker who preaches positivity may be found casting shadows in the restroom right after delivering a rousing talk on optimism, progress, and readiness.
In my experience, the list of characters in the public speaking industry rivals the drama of celebrity gossip columns. Yet, amidst the noise, I find myself increasingly disenchanted with the worn-out rhetoric of some speakers. Their speeches often resemble opinionated anthems, lacking substance and empirical backing. As the Bible wisely advises, "Lean not to your own understanding." As someone deeply rooted in philosophy and debate—I was once the queen of the college debate team—I value arguments grounded in principles and supported by empirical data, free from fallacies.

Speaking coaches, unfortunately, often fall short in teaching these essential skills. Many high-priced training programs emphasize manipulation under the guise of persuasion, neglecting the integrity of argumentation. The speaking industry's shady practices only reinforce this perception. However, change is coming. Through my writing in Keynote Magazine, I aim to shed light on these issues with insightful and context-rich content.
It's worth noting that most speaking platforms shy away from teaching the art of debate. Mastery of debate requires dedication, learning, and investment—qualities often at odds with quick cash grabs in the speaking circuit, where longevity can be fleeting. Beyond the glamour of the stage, I'm intrigued by what happens behind the curtain when the lights dim.
