Here's an idea - the +1 philosophy

There is not a week that goes by without me exploring Australia's professional networking scene. There are so many events and topics covered and many prick my interest including developments in the corporate learning space, digital disruption, change management and innovation.

Going along to events like these are not only a great way to increase your knowledge and bridge any skill gaps but also to meet people and build on your professional connections...or your network!

A lot of people shudder at the term 'network' but when we think of our expanding network as 'connections' it appears more approachable, acceptable and perhaps accessible.

Our connections can link us to new people, new information, new directions, new connections.

Finding networking events can be half the battle but then when you have found them fear can set in about 'going it alone'.

Let me introduce you to the +1 concept.

I came across this at a recent business development networking (oops connecting) meeting. My peer group spoke with humour about being someone's +1 if a client let them down at an event or function.

I started to reflect on my own experiences of networking and thought what a great idea this would be to talk to people you meet at events about being their +1 at?any?other industry events. Not just to replace the 'no-shows' but attend alongside them as a business partner/associate.

So thanks to this concept I have now found myself attending a business breakfast next week as a guest (+1)and also have invited a lawyer with the same interest in a group to a lunch event with me...so she will be my +1.

Building your connections is a critical aspect of building your career or business. Even in your community having a rich group of connections can support you.

So who can you have the +1 conversation with?

Let me know how you go.

NB - I am always happy to go along to relevant networking events/lunches/book launches/conferences - always happy to be a +1!

I love this idea Sally-Anne Blanshard and have been doing it for awhile with women that I mentor, to pay it forward. I am also love being a plus one as it not only opens you to people but new ideas and possibilities. I’m with you! #plus1movement?

I love this Sal. But you know, I think you’ve been doing the +1 for a long time. I’m pretty sure I’ve been your +1 before. Well overdue for doing it again!

What a great idea! Also makes networking a little less intimidating for more introverted peeps.?
