Here’s how your data center could heat a building, or even a swimming pool

As energy prices continue to skyrocket globally and living costs rise, the green agenda is more than just a consideration – it's the right thing to do. There isn’t a business or household in Europe which hasn’t experienced rising costs in 2022.

We’re seeing an increased level of urgency around solutions to reduce energy costs, due to ongoing geopolitical crises. The digital agenda has picked up pace and there is a growing market for Edge Computing, along with Return On Investment (ROI) calculations that were made in the past, having now come to the fore.

At Dell Technologies , our 2030 moonshot goals will help reduce our environmental impact while driving even better conditions for those with whom we partner. By collaborating across our value chain, including with our technology partner 英特尔 , we’re driving circularity and tackling climate change enroute to our net zero goal.

So, what can we do to make our data centers and systems more energy efficient, while sowing the seeds for growth and generating more output?

Two innovative solutions which we already utilize in our OEM Solutions portfolio, could be the answer. Liquid Immersion Cooling (LIC) and Modular Data Centers (MDCs) hold the power to make our data center set-ups more energy efficient, reducing costs with trackable improvements which speak for themselves. Here’s how.

Beat the heat

As children, we were taught that electronics and liquid shouldn't mix. Liquid Immersion Cooling, on the other hand, involves immersing the entire server in an inert liquid, which conducts heat away from the device.

This enables data centers to be up to 80% more efficient, keeping power consumption and energy costs down.

This means more computing power in a smaller space. You could even reuse the heat generated to warm a building or swimming pool if you are so inclined.

To give you a real-world example of LIC’s flexibility, we partner with GRC to provide solutions that are agile, energy-efficient and don’t place limits on cooling, growth, or location.

Used by the US Air Force,?the Department of Defense and the National Security Agency,?even the harshest of environments can count on immediate energy savings, space consolidation and worry-free server reliability at the Edge.

And finally, imagine a data center made from interchangeable blocks

Because MDCs are built in blocks, they’re not only endlessly scalable, they’re also a sustainable option. There’s capacity to add more containers when you need to go bigger, allowing you to outpace brick-and-mortar center set-ups. This is a convenient, portable way of deploying data center capacity, which can be placed wherever and whenever. The results are greater flexibility and sustainability because you only use what you need.

Both LIC and MDCs are the ideal companions for the Edge, putting computer processing where it is needed. We’re taking these formerly niche solutions mainstream, encompassing our umbrella of Edge compute solutions and the many partners we have, large and small, to guarantee savings on space, to cut costs and to better support the environment.
