Hello,

Over the past three years, CPI has been laser-focused on the ‘F’ word. No - not that one. We’re talking, of course, about?failure -?the undesired and unexpected outcomes that happen all the time in government (and in any sector, for that matter). Despite their ubiquity, failures in government are often swept under the rug, unexplored or unaddressed until they are repeated again or devolve into major disasters.

And yet, CPI believes that every failure represents a learning opportunity: a chance to more deeply understand the root of a problem or to affect a wider systems change. Over the past year, we partnered with the National Association of County Administrators and four U.S. counties to?build cultures of innovation that embrace failures as learning opportunities .

Through the?Failing Forward in Local Government ?program, 100+ public servants across 10 departments embarked on a year-long journey to understand what was keeping them from innovating and developing new ideas to address those challenges. By the program’s end, almost all of the participants felt more comfortable taking risks because they felt supported by their teams.

This week, we are proud to release a?toolkit ?with a?step-by-step process ?for public servants interested in embarking on their own Fail Forward journey. This process ultimately supports cultures in which employees - from department directors to frontline workers - are motivated to embrace experimentation and continuous learning.

We encourage you to use this toolkit to unlock innovation on your teams. Reach out if you’d like to partner with us along the way!

Go forth and fail forward!
