Here's How To Master Multidimensional Interviewing - Techniques To Elevate Your Career with Emotional Intelligence

In the realm of career elevation, there's a moment of [psychological] transition,

when you realize that there's more to gain from elevating yourself first,

than from elevating the process.

And expertise come with understanding.

One of the moments I see in client is most imperative to understand, it's the complexities of the interview's psychology and process.

So I want to introduce a new concept in your world. A concept you might have never heard of:

Multidimensional Interview Strategy.

Which in short is all about exploring how to tailor your approach to a varied audience with varied ulterior motives, ensuring a resonant, congruent, and impactful impression.

Understanding Your Audience:

At the heart of any successful interview strategy lies a profound understanding of your audience.

At a psychological and psychographic level.

Who are they and what is going through their day?

Are you an asset or a potential liability to their day. Their week. Their month. Their career?

That's how they're going to look at you. Are you going to look at them in the same manner?

While many candidates prepare rigorously for the questions ahead, they often miss the mark by maintaining a one-dimensional approach.

"I'm just trying to figure out what they're going to ask me"

Review 100s of hypothetical question in case any comes up.

There's thousands of reasons why that won't work, but if any, just the mental state of anxiety that generates for the interview isn't worth it!

So, here we go...

To truly stand out, it's essential to recognize and adapt to the distinct personas you'll encounter. Starting with:

1. The External Recruiter

Often your first point of contact.

They scout for alignment between your profile and the job specifications. They're in need of building solid relationships with:

  • Top Candidates
  • ...that'll introduce them to more Top Candidates

  • Top Company [Cultures]
  • ...that'll introduce them to more Top Company [Cultures]

So their job is to keep everybody happy. Heck of a hard job to do btw.

With these recruiters, building a solid relationship lies on demonstrating a clear understanding of the industry and role can set a positive tone for subsequent interactions.

2. The Internal Recruiter or HR

Going a step further,

Internal recruiters will be in touch with these external recruiters (potentially), and what they'll be assessing (in a solid company), is:

  • Cultural fit
  • Long-term potential within the company.

With these recruiters, showcasing adaptability and a collaborative spirit is key to resonating.

Showing up as an enabler, and not as a "difficult" candidate is going to be massive.

3. The Hiring Manager

This person will be your direct link. Let me say this:

your direct link

your direct link

your direct link

your direct link

to all things with this company. You want to keep this person as happy and informed as possible.

He/she will be your direct link to the role's responsibilities and expectations.

Here, a nuanced approach highlighting your specific skills and achievements can underscore your readiness for the position.

4. The Senior to the Hiring Manager

Once you've gotten to this interview, the main thing is "not to screw it up".

By this time, most likely, you've nailed other interviews with everyone, and they're all "pro you".

So here you just have to demonstrate strategic insight and the ability to contribute to broader organizational goals.

No need to try to shine him/her, more show that you're camaraderie focused

Your ability to think and plan long-term will be under scrutiny.

Expanding Your Interviewing Lens - Multidimensional Strategy:

To effectively engage with these varied profiles, adopt a multidimensional perspective. This means:

Customizing Your Message:

Tailor your responses to reflect the interviewer's role and concerns.

This alignment shows your attentiveness and ability to integrate into different facets of the organization.

They'll secretly love this!

Emotional Intelligence:

Understand and empathize with each interviewer's unique perspective and challenges.

This angle and connection can significantly elevate your appeal as a candidate.

Don't ever get into counterposing perspectives (interviewers might not get along with each other, for example).

Strategic Self-Presentation:

Align your professional narrative with the company's values

THIS IS HUGE

but important to be genuine, not fake on this.

The specific nuances of each interviewer's role is something you've got to train.

Your ability to present yourself as a multifaceted asset will set you apart.

Bringing It All Together

This is going to sound weird. But...

You-need-to-practice all these.

There's no way you'll nail it off the bat.

Here's different techniques you can adopt:

  • Record yourself roleplaying
  • Go into interview "you don't care about"
  • Record some more
  • Talk to a ton of recruiters
  • Make a swipe file of lingo you hear from different interviewer personas
  • Etc...

Incorporating these multidimensional interviewing techniques can transform your approach from standard to standout.

By understanding and engaging the spectrum of interviewers that I talk about above, you'll position yourself as a versatile and insightful candidate.

They'll see you as "the sharp guy/gal".

Capable of navigating the complexities of any organizational environment.

Embrace this journey with openness and strategic acumen, and watch as new doors of opportunity swing wide open.

This makes sense but you need further insight?

The game changer for me was the strategic self presentation. I'm pretty sure that not knowing this crucial component has been the reason why i failed many interviews in the past....Great article.
