Here’s how Google Search responds to generic AI-generated content

The previous SEO consultant for a client recommended creating simple service pages for each of the 29 services offered. Unfortunately, the consultant generated generic content for these pages and used the same image across all of them. As a result, Google only indexed the homepage and the "About Us" page, leaving the rest out of search engine results.

Upon reviewing the issue, it became clear that:

  1. Manual submissions for indexing won’t solve the problem.
  2. Google is actually doing them a favor hiding these pages. No business wants potential customers to encounter low-quality, meaningless content.
  3. This isn’t a quick fix. Addressing the issue requires a strategic overhaul of the website's content and structure.

The strategy I developed focused on the following essential actions:

  1. Answer Visitor Questions: Each page should address the logical sequence of questions a visitor might have.
  2. Structured Content: Ensure the content has a clear structure, includes links to external resources, and incorporates necessary HTML tags for SEO.
  3. Visual Enrichment: Use illustrations, videos, and authentic client photos to make the content more engaging and informative.
  4. Authentic Voices: Include genuine input from clients and business owners to create relatable and trustworthy content.
  5. Keyword Optimization: Optimize all content with relevant keywords to enhance search visibility.
  6. Internal Linking: Implement a proper internal linking strategy to connect related pages and improve navigation.

The entire implementation process took about six months, but there were no immediate results—Google wasn’t responding.

The missing piece was publishing new content. Edits and rewrites alone weren’t enough to prompt Google’s attention.

Once a few bottom-of-the-funnel content pieces were published and linked to the optimized service pages, Google began indexing the pages.

As a result, all 29 service pages were successfully indexed, leading to an immediate increase in impressions.

Key lessons from this 8-month journey:

  • Authentic, human-centric content is the most competitive and effective type of content.
  • Achieving this level of quality is impossible with an impatient client.
  • Every page’s content must be intentional, well-written, and fully optimized.
  • This experience provided valuable lessons to apply in my full-time role and with other clients
