For many of us, the food waste disposer is one of those household appliances that’s a real boon. We flip a switch, and the?disposer?magically disappears our food waste. But ever wondered how it actually works?

A?food?waste disposer?is a pretty simple machine.

Unlike a blender, which uses spinning blades to chop food particles, a?food waste disposer?uses a spinning disc or impeller plate that spins rapidly, forcing the food waste against the outer wall of the grinding chamber. This grinds the food waste into tiny bits, after which it is washed by water through holes in the chamber wall.

The liquefied food waste expels from the disposer and into the wastewater pipe. Afterwards, it flows to a wastewater treatment plant or a septic tank.
