Here's How to Figure Out What To Do With Your Life

Ever wondered what decisions you took today will matter most when you're looking back at 60, 70 or 80

Hello Tribe,

Last Monday of the month, huh? How excited are you about it?

Does it feel like it's been forever or has time been moving at lightning speed?

For me, it’s a mix—fast, then slow, then fast again and boom, here we are just 4 days to go. Anyways, today's newsletter is a bit of an evaluation or assessment type and yes, the email timing was no mistake. It's a deliberate effort because I need us to really sit with this one. So, with that said, let’s dive in, shall we?

One Thing I’m Doing: The Regret Minimization Framework

So, lately, I’ve been making decisions at a really fast pace and here's one framework that's been a game changer for me. It’s called Regret Minimization. It might not work for every situation, but it’s been helping me move past decisions quickly and confidently.

It basically boils down to this: What choices can I make today that will minimize the regret I might feel when I’m 80, looking back at my life? So by minimizing future regret, i sleep better knowing I’m doing my best to maximize fulfillment now.

One Thing I’m Learning: How to Figure Out What To Do With Your Life (A Framework)

I recently came across a gem from Julian's Newsletter and trust me, it hit home! With the end of the month in sight and that “Sober Era” vibe kicking in, it feels like the right time to share.

Julian talks about a simple and powerful method for figuring out what to focus on in life and it starts with identifying your values. Here's the framework:

  1. List your personal values (things that are most important to you right now).
  2. Rank these values in order of importance.
  3. Lastly check which activities or careers align with your top values.

Here are the values he listed for himself which we can use aswell:

  • Knowledge: Do you become more skilled from it?
  • Adventure: Does it create novel experiences?
  • Fame: Does it build an audience?
  • Power: Does it give you resources or connections?
  • Money: Does it grow your wealth?
  • Exercising Talent: Does it challenge your skills and creativity?
  • Human Connection: Does it build meaningful bonds?

Here is what I learned regardless:

  • Your values will evolve, so it’s important to reassess/reevaluate them periodically.
  • Money isn’t everything (so cliche coming from me lols)—but well after a certain point, it doesn’t really add much happiness (for now its does to me, hehehe).
  • Fulfillment comes from alignment. Focus on things that match your values right now—not what you thought mattered.
  • Be intentional. Reflect on what you truly want so you don’t just chase what others expect from you.

One Thing You Should Try: Value Alignment Exercise

I’m sure you saw this one coming - Julian recommended this exercise and I think it's the perfect time for you to try it too:

  1. Grab a piece of pen and paper.
  2. Write down the values you care most about when pursuing projects. For most, this will include Knowledge, Adventure, Fame, Power, Money, Exercising Talent and Human Connection like Julian. But make your list your own!
  3. Rank these values in order of importance today.
  4. For each project you're considering, place a checkmark next to the value(s) it aligns with most. A tip is to think long-term: Does the project fulfill your top values? Prioritize what matters most right now.
  5. Based on the number of checkmarks, Compare each project based on how well it aligns with your values.

Ask yourself: Which project will I regret the most not accomplishing by the time I'm 80, based on my current values? and just maybe there you have your answers. Btw, if this was helpful, don’t forget to pay your tithes here.

Now It’s Your Turn!
