Here's how elites stole the word entrepreneur from us.

Here's how elites stole the word entrepreneur from us.

I'm the classic definition of an entrepreneur.

My idea turns into a vision. That leads to action. Then, I jump into motion and risk everything to turn the world I imagine into my daily reality.

I've been doing this my entire life. I can't remember not being like this. I've found the opposite tortuously hard: finding a way to fit into society as it exists.

In a conversation with an extremely brilliant and supportive friend in Silicon Valley, it became apparent that top elite entrepreneurs don't consider me one of them.

An entrepreneur, defined by elites, has an idea worthy of funding, potential product/market fit, and sound marketing messaging, and then learns from experts how to build prototypes, prove the concept, and get funded for the exit.

I've never had any of that, but I've been working for myself or in direct eat-what-you-kill sales roles, succeeding my entire life as an entrepreneur.

It's time we redefine the term, remove it from the technology industry, and carve out our lane. Many of these people are not real entrepreneurs anyway.

Brilliant technologists who develop effective approaches, secure funding to design them, and join incubators to achieve success may be more corporate than entrepreneurial. Where are vision, imagination, and risk in some of this?

Chasing unicorn status does not make one an entrepreneur. It's the opposite. I've put my life and future on the line daily, motivated by purpose, passion, and vision. I've never been particularly smart, can't write code, and will never pitch investors.

Entrepreneurs dream of their next venture in the technology corridors of power, and the same goes on in the world's slums. The ultimate injustice and confusion is the idea that this word has been defined by those who control the most money.

I've watched panels of billionaire entrepreneurs share their experiences. Theirs feel no different from mine. The zeros on the end go on longer. That's about it.

Why does this matter?

The new world of entrepreneurship arrived in the form of an economy where it's possible to become who you are, create from vision, and share from experience. It's possible, works, and is accessible to everybody. The danger is missing it.

If you feel like an entrepreneur but doubt the truth due to definitions, evaluate yourself against this simple matrix of experience. Your freedom to expand your vision, create from imagination, and make money now depends on knowing this.

  1. Does your idea for your life and company feel like a burning passion where you are willing to do what it takes to succeed?
  2. Do you feel that you found something crucial that others want to know but may not know as clearly as you?
  3. Has the direction you want to take emerged in more clarity or come as a flash capturing your imagination?

My first entrepreneurial success was a lifestyle business I created from a family company I didn't want to work in. My vision was to use it to build an exciting life where I could live overseas, do what I wanted, and have the freedom to learn.

I now know that after a lifetime of entrepreneurial adventures, the threads that bind together the success stories have nothing to do with coding software, pitching investors, or getting a certificate to prove I'm an entrepreneur.

The second success came from a sales job where I wanted to prove that I could succeed outside the family business. My vision was different. It was about crushing success through force of motion, intelligence, and creative action.

Years later, my virtual lead generation and sales outsourcing company came from what I learned from that second entrepreneurial success. The original vision was an act as part of a bigger play. Because of this, I have a passive income business.

Freedom comes from knowing who you are. Life opened more to me when I claimed my inner entrepreneur in the face of my doubt about my authenticity, value, or vision from another who defines the word entrepreneur differently.

When leading program development in corporate I called it continuous iteration. It's doing what we can now, review, adjust, move forward, review, adjust, move forward. The final result usually is not what I envisioned, but often so much better.

Great post! I completely agree that it's important to have fun, test, iterate, and enjoy the consequences as an entrepreneur. It's also important to not get caught up in the definitions and just focus on creating from vision and sharing from experience. Thank you for sharing your insights and offering to discuss further.
