Call us crazy, but our mission is to grow more good.
One day, in early 2017, my friend Lenora Rand and I were talking about what we wanted to do with the next chapter of our lives. Big stuff actually... We were asking ourselves questions like what could we do that would be deeply meaningful to us? What could we do that would leverage our considerable knowledge and experience? We'd both been working in the biggest and best advertising agencies for a long time.
We’d seen a lot, learned a lot. Some of it absolutely wonderful, some of it not so much.
Because when big agencies work with big companies, some important things can get lost in the process. Things like passion, heart, risk, and idealism. Not to mention being able to get things done, quickly and efficiently and, you know, pleasantly.
Lenora and I realized at that moment; we wanted to be a part of something different.
We wanted to help the “good guys/gals” win.
Because when we looked around in our big agency jobs it seemed like the bad guys were way ahead and the good ones weren’t always getting the benefit of the best learning and experience.
That “looking around” also revealed way too many people who looked way too similar, something the industry really struggles with. This ran counter to what we both knew in our hearts to be right.
So we decided to take our big agency experience and help for-profits, non-profits, and social enterprises - basically the people who had ideas, products, or services that made the world better in some small (or huge) way.
We also decided to do that from a woman-first perspective. Two chicks starting a new agency who believed in diversity of thought, having more efficiency, less hierarchy, and growing more good? Our values were practically written.
We started to help those “good guy/gals” sort through what they did (their product offerings and benefits) to discover WHY they did it, their reason for doing what they do, or, their meaning.
Help them discover and articulate their WHY, as Simon Sinek so eloquently talks about in his famous Ted Talk. Help them build their business and share what they have to offer with people who need and want it most.
Help them all grow their good.
And yes, even help them make more money — because guess what? Turns out doing good has been proven to be good for your bottom line, too.
So Lenora and I dove in. Headfirst. Named ourselves SmallGood and we haven’t looked back since.
It’s been a great ride working with some wonderful foundations, start-ups, social enterprises, and growing businesses. Helping them with strategies, communication plans, messaging, branding, logos, identities, creative campaigns, blogging, SEO, media management, and most importantly, helping them define their meaning. It’s making both of us really happy. And it's making those partners happy too.
We know it’s kind of a crazy idea, to start an agency with the mission of trying to help create more good in the world. But honestly, it seemed crazier for us not to.
So, if you’re one of the crazy ones out there doing it, we applaud you. We salute you. We’re 100% for you. And hey, we’d love to work with you.
Because it seems like the world needs more good right now, more than ever. And as Steve Jobs once said, “…the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do."
That’s what we’re counting on.
