What questions must BIM Managers deal with?

Here's about 3% of the questions a BIM Manager must solve in their first 2 days on a new project…

Why are we doing BIM?

How do we share models?

Is IFC important?

Is COBie important?

How do we create, manage and track the BIM Execution Plan?

How does this affect our contracts?

Will our hardware and software need upgrades?

What’s the real purpose?

Will the estimators need the quantities from the model?

Is BIM trying to take my job?

Which quantities, when will they need them?

Is this a one-off-model or will the model develop over time?

How will we review the design together?

Will we use VR, AR, what about MR?

How do we avoid BIM scope gaps?

Oh no, actually what about overlapping BIM scope?

Which Elements, how many is too many?

What could be considered too few?

For who?

By whom?

How do we cut BIM waste?

How do we define the geometry needed - will just a symbol do?

How about basic just generic looking geometry - will that work for some of our BIM Uses?

Does this area have to use specific materials for visualization?

Will we need to fabricate from it?

Where do we need to be more accurate?

Do we need "millimeter accuracy" or is "six inches" enough?

How do we specify the Level of Accuracy required?

Is it measured accuracy, is that different for represented accuracy in the model?

Do we need lasers or just photos?

Do we coordinate these systems too?

How will we deal with zero, zero, zero?

What's generative design?

Do I have to learn to code?

When should we coordinate, what, how often, which phases, levels or areas?

How do we track progress?

How do we use the model in the field?

Should we be collecting as-builts - as redline drawings?

With photos?

Should the photos be stored somewhere - collected as 360 images with a walkthrough?

Will the owner want the model, what about information?

Software Parameters?

Equipment Specifications?

Owner Manuals?

Warranty information?

Will we be dumping data into an FM system?

Who’s responsible for collecting the data?

When?!?

How do we verify what's been done?

How do we learn and improve on the next project?

How do I prevent my BIM team from being stolen by my competitor?

If you got this far you probably already know that you need a great BIM Management Platform to help with all of this (that's the ad by the way).

Happy BIM'ing everyone and good luck with those tough BIM questions!!!

Good one Clive Jordan - fighter of Evil BIM This is a good list to start from for BIM Execution plans, BIM Protocols, EIRs, BIPs, BIM Processes, ect.

and there is always the "it would be a lot quicker to do this in 2D..."

Life throws many curves that are not always expected. Accept them and learn from them and move on.

Must add BIM legal, there some where.
