Here’s to 2021 and the customers who made a difference in our communities

As another year comes to an end and all of us clear out our email inboxes in preparation for well deserved holiday breaks, it is hard not to reflect on the last 12 months. 2021 certainly had its fair share of challenges, but it also stands for many great accomplishments we were able to achieve with our customers.

From safely reopening schools to implementing advanced grid technologies or supporting our customers on their journey towards a more sustainable and equitable future, these joint successes prove that hard work and innovation will deliver results.

Across the country, higher education institutions rose to the challenges posed by COVID-19 and escalating environmental concerns. At Maryland’s Morgan State University, the college invested in smart HVAC solutions to improve indoor air quality. They also implemented digital solutions for security, fire safety and exterior lighting — all while laying the groundwork for a more sustainable future that optimizes energy efficiency and renewable sources.

More recently, the University of California, San Francisco agreed to collaborate with us to create the world’s first carbon-neutral radiology imaging service - well before their original 2025 goal.

Airports saw next-generation solutions take flight as well. Kansas City International Airport’s new terminal project, dubbed 'Build KCI', will up the flying experience with a new, one-million-square-foot smart facility that utilizes future-proof, scalable solutions designed to grow with emerging needs. Passengers can look forward to a seamless, safe and secure travel experience that automates check-in and simplifies navigation through the airport.

Enabled by smart technology, 2021 introduced major advancements in energy resilience. Hawaiian Electric continued its infrastructure upgrades with a system-wide implementation of Siemens' Fusesaver (R), reducing the number and duration of outages while also limiting the number of affected customers.

On the mainland, we supported the Virginia Energy Savings Performance Contracting program as Virginia became the second US state ever to reach $1 billion in energy savings.

Finally, in a move we can all celebrate, Marble Distilling Company embarked on their mission to become the most sustainable, zero-waste distillery on the planet. Using Siemens valves and actuators to automate and better control the distilling process, MDC is recovering and reusing process heat to optimize water and energy conservation.

The common denominator behind these stories, are our people. Despite the ongoing pandemic, they showed up with all hands on deck to help our customers make their energy efficiency, resiliency, and sustainability goals reality.

By working together as one organization we are making a difference. I am proud of each one of our team members and our commitment to "Transform the Everyday", one day at a time.

As this hectic year draws to a close, it is my sincere hope that all of us have the opportunity to pause and enjoy the holidays before we embark on the exciting infrastructure journey that awaits us in 2022.
