We spent the summer in Europe to escape the Miami humidity and I got the chance to visit some of my favorite European destinations for the first time since 2019. Barcelona is the adult version of Disney meets Instagram (lots of pink cookies and eye-catching merchandise in the hundreds of boutiques). Valencia (hi

) is what Barcelona was 20 years ago with great food, a relaxed vibe and excellent walkability. My hometown, Munich (

I lived in London (

nice seeing y'all) at the beginning of my career 20 years ago and was impressed by how beautiful the city is today. Public transport is excellent, it's truly international and people really enjoy the summer. And the architecture is innovative and new! This photo was taken from the Uber ferry that goes up and down the Thames - highly recommended.
And United has brought back nonstop flights from New York to the Canary Islands and if you haven't been there (specifically Lanzarote), now is the time with the Euro being on sale!
And now.... here's why summer in Europe is the best:
- People take their vacations seriously and they take longer, 2-4 week vacations and actually disconnect
- Outdoor dining and bars are everywhere: in the big cities, on the beach, in the parks, biergartens. Try finding a good beachfront restaurant or large outdoor restaurant in the United States - this has gotten better since Covid but still nowhere near Europe, especially on the beach.
- Public transportation is excellent: especially in London there's a huge selection of e-bikes, scooters, boats, subways... I was there during a transit strike but hardly noticed it. And most European railways are essentially free this year as they're trying to get people back on public transport!
- In Europe you can still buy print newspapers and magazines everywhere and that is simply the best way to read, especially outdoors. I love reading the FT Weekend edition and unfortunately it is hardly available in the United States outside of NYC.
- Given the low Euro, it's very affordable to travel for Americans: prices on average are 1/3-1/2 cheaper than in major US destinations (just avoid Mykonos and Ibiza).
- Remote work hasn't really caught on to the same extent it has in the US. This is an area I would bet on for the next 5-10 years: the migration of mobile Europeans from the North and Central of Europe to Spain, Portugal and (maybe) Italy. I'm open to ideas on how to invest in this either through software (tax/ labor law/ other compliance within Europe) or real estate (Malaga is the next Barcelona says
Ana Ari?o
).
- The awareness for climate change is higher in Europe and with the energy shock caused by the Ukraine war, Europeans are now acting with a higher sense of urgency to get away from fossil fuels. I fully believe in the American capitalist spirit so my bet is that the US will become the world leader in climate tech in the next 3-5 years (
Hampus Jakobsson
Fridtjof Detzner
Albert Wenger
- do you agree?) but the Europeans will be there alongside them and hopefully translate current technology leadership into a set of European climate unicorns that mirror the success of Google, Facebook etc in the last tech revolution
- As summer is winding down in Europe and schools are restarting it's time for us to go back to Miami. If you're European and want to spend the winter in Florida and/or get your winter residence there, hit me up, it's the most wonderful (warm) time of the year there and plenty of solar power, gas and cold beer are available!
