Hi Everyone!
I've decided to begin writing my thoughts and ideas on careers and the job search. We all can use assistance when we are in a career transition and my hope is that through these posts we can all learn. I’ll do my best to keep all posts under 1000 words. To begin, here are 4 things you should do when you are considering a new job.
- Use your network. Inform those you know and trust that you are considering making a move. Often, your network can connect you with new opportunities or knows someone in their network who can connect you.
- Follow up on an application. It's extremely important that when you apply to a position, you follow up on the application with a phone call, email or a LinkedIn message. Regardless of where you apply, try to find someone to reach out to and become more informed of where you are you in the process.
- Proofread your resume. Have a friend or colleague proofread your resume for grammar issues and to see if they get an idea of what your responsibilities have been. Make sure you explain your responsibilities and Return on Investment (ROI) for the positions you’ve held. Tailor your resume to the position you are applying for and be concise. However, if your resume doesn't talk about your skills and experiences in enough detail, few will give you the chance to explain it in an interview. Some will tell you to limit the number of pages in a resume...I don't agree with this wholeheartedly, I do think it's important to be concise.
- Know your resume. Too often, I ask candidates about something on their resume and they can’t talk about it thoroughly. You should be able to discuss in detail everything on your resume.
I hope you enjoyed my first post! If there are topics that you’d like to hear more about, feel free to comment or send me a message!

Great tips, Anthony! I will say that I've actually been scolded by HR recruiters for following up on applications and after interviews. I suppose like anything else this will vary from industry to industry and company to company, but it has happened more than once.
