Designing spaces that go beyond open plan

Here we go again...

Recent articles slamming “open–plan offices” has been getting a lot of attention in recent weeks.

We have moved far beyond the “open-plan office” and just because an office has a more open design it does not mean it is “open-plan”. We are embracing many more advanced planning concepts to address the needs of organizations today and making space more human-centric and about the user experience.

At HOK we promote work space that align with the specific needs of our clients – be that open plan, fully enclosed planning and everything in between; we work collaboratively with our clients to understand their function needs and their culture to come up with the best planning solution.

At HOK we understand that not all space is created equally, and that not all open environments equal open plan. We see it as our role to educate our clients about the benefits of different planning models to ensure our solutions are tailored to create the right environment and the right experience.

We recently put together the following presentation to help clarify the terms. https://youtu.be/UwWBlqH166c

Kay, interesting presentation - and mostly I agree wholeheartedly. I particularly like your comment about selecting furniture to drive a behaviour. Having said that is day that's the heart of my despaired working in Asia because I don't think designers here think about that hard enough or often enough. On NCE, that to me is just well executed ABW. There potential to do this week, in any market in the world - comes down to the right process and exciters who know what they are doing. Sally that is lacking, leading to bad environments that are rightly admonished by the media and folklore - all the time making our jobs harder!!
