Here are the traits you can cultivate now to be a great leader

Whether you run your own business or lead a large team, the best leaders require a strong set of?leadership qualities?to be successful and positively impact those around them – especially in times of momentous challenges such as those we are facing during the pandemic.

Right now, people are craving strong leadership even more. But there has been heated debate about whether good leaders are born or made – and although some people are undoubtedly gifted with great leadership skills, I personally believe anyone can learn to be an effective leader.

This is a viewpoint famed motivational speaker Tony Robbins has emphasised often. As he puts it: “Don’t hold yourself back thinking that the potential for?leadership?is something you have or don’t. These?limiting beliefs?keep you from your full potential and exist only in your head.”

So, for a moment try thinking of leadership as?a personal journey and instead of starting with the question, "How should I manage my team?" instead ask "Why should anybody on my team listen to me?"?

There are certain qualities that an aspiring leader must cultivate to get the buy in of others. The first is confidence. True leaders are confident in their delivery – without being arrogant – and display qualities like?openness, emotional agility, and resourcefulness.

Running parallel with confidence is vision. Great leaders develop a sense of purpose, and they are passionate about the possibilities of the sphere they work in. This naturally inspires those around them.?

Just as important is resilience – a trait that often separates a good leader from a great leader. The ability to weather storms, show courage under pressure, and elevate spirits when times get tough only comes through experience and practice. Resilience is something we’re all getting plenty of practice in right now.

The mistake many make is using a top position as a power trip – this is the last thing it should be. People who get into leadership to further their own sense of importance rarely last long because their own team sees through them.?Humility is a much-undervalued leadership trait.

My advice to young aspiring leaders is to?seek inspiration from those who have been visibly successful in high profile leadership roles. There are a lot of helpful resources out there, from motivational Ted Talks to insightful Harvard Business School content.??

Above all, the commitment to becoming a great leader should be ongoing as the skills that are required will evolve as the challenges of modern business also evolve. Therefore, a great leader is never a finished product, they are constantly learning and improving as they go.
