Here are Top Concerns for Job Seekers [Summer 2023]
Welcome to the latest edition of the Career Warrior Newsletter! In this month's issue, we jump into the top concerns for job seekers in the summer of 2023.
Over the last several weeks, my co-founder Matthew Villanueva and I have engaged in hundreds of direct interactions with a diverse group of job seekers. These interactions provided us with valuable insights into the challenges and worries that job seekers are facing in their current job search.
As we delved deeper into these conversations, we noticed common themes and patterns emerging. It became evident that there were specific concerns that job seekers were grappling with in the summer of 2023.
As a side note, yes, these concerns have changed over the last few years (and even the last few months).
What's the Point?
We wrote this edition of the Career Warrior Newsletter because we wanted to address these concerns and shed light on them for others.
Through this newsletter, we aimed to offer a sense of hope and encouragement. We wanted job seekers to realize that while the road may be challenging, there are strategies and solutions available to overcome these concerns.
By addressing these issues head-on, we hoped to empower job seekers and equip them with the tools they need to succeed.
So let's jump right in!
Top Concerns for Job Seekers [Summer 2023]
#1. Applying Online Feels Like a Black Hole ???
One of the top concerns for job seekers this summer is the feeling that applying online is like sending their resumes into a black hole. Though a common theme throughout the years, this sentiment has become more prevalent recently.
In our latest Career Warrior Podcast episode, Matt explains that many individuals have shared their frustration about spending hours upon hours applying for jobs online, only to receive no response whatsoever. These complaints have especially increased over the last few months as the job market becomes increasingly competitive.
It's not just the rejections that bother us; it's the deafening silence. Job seekers long for even a simple acknowledgement of their application. This sense of being lost in the vast digital landscape can be disheartening and demotivating.
Combatting this concern: One approach to bypassing the black hole is to tap into the hidden job market -- or at least diversify your application strategy. You should not simply spray your resume online and pray that your dream job arrives.
Building meaningful connections and seeking referrals can help you access job opportunities that are not widely advertised online. Networking and leveraging personal connections can significantly increase your chances of getting noticed and landing interviews.
#2. Coping with Rejection ??
Receiving rejections during the job search process is undoubtedly one of the toughest challenges for job seekers.
Whether it's the silence of being ghosted or the direct "no" from employers, rejection can take a toll on one's confidence and motivation. The feeling of being passed over despite knowing that you are a qualified candidate can be disheartening.
Combatting this concern: Remember that rejection is a common part of the job search journey. Stay persistent and resilient. Seek support from friends, family, or mentors who can provide encouragement and guidance.
It's crucial to separate your personal worth from job rejections and remind yourself of your unique skills and value.

#3. Tailoring Resumes Takes Time ?
Job seekers understand the importance of tailoring their resumes for specific positions and industries.
However, many express their concern about the significant amount of time it takes to create multiple versions of their resumes and cover letters. With other commitments such as full-time jobs, families, or side gigs, they find it challenging to dedicate extra hours each week to their job search.
Combatting this concern: Consider seeking assistance from professional resume services or consulting with a friend or family member who can provide an objective perspective.
By collaborating with others, you can streamline the resume creation process and make it more efficient. Develop a master version of your resume and customize it for different job applications within specific industry or job function folders on your computer or drive.
#4. Changing Industries or Job Functions is Tough ??
Transitioning to a new industry or making a significant change in job function can be daunting for job seekers. Some individuals desire to move from one industry to another, while others contemplate switching to a completely different job function.
They encounter difficulties due to employers often seeking candidates with relevant industry-specific experience or fearing that their skills might not be transferable.
Combatting this concern: Craft a targeted resume that highlights transferable skills and experiences relevant to the desired industry or job function.
Emphasize accomplishments and demonstrate how your skills can be applied in the new context. Networking and building connections in the desired industry can also open doors and provide valuable insights and opportunities.
#5. Uncertainty about Career Direction ??
Another significant concern expressed by job seekers is the lack of clarity regarding their career direction. Many individuals find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of what they truly want to do next. They may feel lost, overwhelmed, and paralyzed by fear and indecision.
Combatting this concern: Seek the help of career coaches or read career development books to gain insights and clarity.
Engage in self-reflection, identify your strengths, interests, and values, and explore various industries or job functions that align with them. Take small steps towards discovering your true passion and purpose, and don't hesitate to reach out for guidance.
Closing Thoughts
The main motivation behind the podcast episode was to let job seekers know that they are not alone in their struggles. By sharing these concerns, we aimed to create a sense of community and support, where job seekers could find peace in knowing that others were going through similar experiences.
It was through this firsthand experience through direct emails and phone calls that we were able to gather data and information that truly captured the top concerns of job seekers.
We wanted our readers to feel heard and understood, which is why we decided to structure the newsletter around these concerns.
Remember, Career Warriors, you are not alone in your job search journey. These concerns are shared by countless others. Stay persistent, seek support, and continue to adapt and grow. As always, we're here to support you in your career goals.
