Here Is More of the Story!
People are asking.
??????What happened next?
“Tell us more,” is a request I have heard and acknowledge.
??????When does a story end?
???????????This one is not there yet!
After I received …
?????The Message 0n Delta’s Dinner Flight …
???????????I went immediately to Corpus Christi.
?In the beginning of this story, I had been excited about recruiting a good man to operate the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Texas, not recognizing it was the wrong role, in the wrong place for him.
That’s why the original franchisee I recruited for the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Padres Staples Mall left to do something else in a different place.
? It was my mistake.
? ????I was learning by my mistakes.
I was learning …
?????People Decisions are …
??????????the Most Important Decisions …
??????????????Executives Make!
For the right person, a role in the food service business is a dream come true.?For the wrong person, it is an unbearable realization that it is not for everyone.
I was learning …
?????selecting a good person is not enough,
That good person must be in the right role …
?????in the right place.
Now on with the story.
When I arrived in Corpus Christi to replace the Operator (franchisee), I asked the restaurant employees if they knew someone who would be a good candidate to be the Operator.?

I was amazed when they said, “Rex would be the best.”
Rex Halsey was a 19 year old former employee who had left for a higher paying job.?
Most surprising of this … Rex was younger than employees who said they would like for him to be their boss!?Another employee who said she would like for him to be her boss was his recent bride, Sue Halsey.
?They were very persuasive!
After the middle-age day manager and the teen night manager confirmed what other employees were telling me, I was convinced that I needed to recruit Rex Halsey to accept the franchise for the restaurant.
The next morning, I called him very early …
?????before he went to work. ?
After meeting, we agreed that he was the right man for the role of Operator of the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Padre Staples Mall.?After Truett Cathy interviewed Rex, he also agreed.
Rex Halsey, at the young age of 19, became the Operator.
That is not all of the story.
Rex became one of Chick-fil-A’s most respected and admired Operators.?He retired at the end of December 2017, after 45 years of representing Chick-fil-A in Corpus Christi, Texas.
There is more!
Rex Halsey became …
??????one of the most important people in … my life.?
The Lord used a messenger to introduce me to Rex.
?????He would use Rex to change me to another person.
That’s a story …
???????I will write soon.

1 年People selection is a leader's most difficult job. Sometimes we allow some of our biases (age, etc.) to influence our decisions. We judge based on the wrong criteria. This is a great story and a good reminder that we need to dig deep and seek the person who will be best for the job. I really liked the fact you went to the employees for their input, not just suggestions.

1 年Agree 100% that selecting the correct Team Member is the most important task of any manager! In my career, I regretted, promoting an individual, instead on another one, to a key role.....the result? A double whammy!!! I lost a good Team member, and the one that got promoted I placed in the wrong role! A few yeas later, I had the opportunity to tell the person I lost, that I had made the wrong choice.....he was appreciative that I made such acknowledgement, it wasn't until that day, that I truly recognized the impact of my wrong choice. A lesson learned for me....and one that I haven't forgot! ...... He, however, made an excellent career switch and remains in the same organization after several promotions.....
