Henri (pronounced “ahn-REE”) is now a Category 1 hurricane with maximum winds of 75 mph, threatening the northeast Sunday and Monday. It is the third hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.
Here’s a breakdown of the variety of threats the storm brings to approximately 40 million people in the Northeast U.S. First, here’s the track:
When looking at the track, don’t just focus on the black line and time breakpoints. These only estimate the location of the center.
Depending on where you are, the winds, surge, and rainfall could have a significant impact, even if the storm doesn’t hit your exact location.
The first impact is the storm surge, where sea levels could rise anywhere from 3 to 5 feet, causing flooding of low-lying areas of Long Island, the Connecticut coast, and the Cape Code region:

Next is rainfall, because even though landfall is expected in central Long Island, rainfall amounts could rise between 6 to 8 inches in parts of New England, as seen below on the left. As a result, flood and flash flood watches are in place, indicated on the right:
Wind could complicate things where landfall occurs, as gusts could reach hurricane force. This could knock down trees and power. Recent rainfall in July in this region left the ground quite saturated, making it easier for strong winds to knock trees over.
Businesses in the threat zone and even inland need to have the best warnings available to ensure quick safety action for staff, along with business continuity.
