The world moves forward into 2025 and some uncharted waters. Presidents will change, Trump is a divisive choice but seems to have won fair and square. Perhaps more worrying that Trump being President again is the amount of sway Elon Musk seems to hold over him. Given the track record of Musk with regards to philanthropy and his vagaries with the truth of the capabilities of his products, it is doubtful that he is working this closely to help anyone other than himself. However, with two such strong willed and outspoken people I doubt the closeness will last to 2026.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In 2025, as a maturing technology, AI is set to revolutionize various sectors with its enhanced capabilities. Natural Language Processing (NLP) will achieve unprecedented levels of human-like understanding, making AI interactions smoother and more intuitive. This means more efficient AI translators, customer service bots that understand context better, and virtual assistants that feel almost human. It will herald a revolution for global information access as people will be able to access vast swathes of data in their native languages and dialects. Small lightweight devices or agentic apps on phones, tablets or laptops, allowing people to raise their base levels of knowledge about many different topics. ?In healthcare, AI's role will expand, with AI-driven diagnostics, personalized treatment plans, and even AI-assisted surgeries becoming more common, leading to better patient outcomes. Search will change radically especially with the moves to break Google’s monopolistic stranglehold on the market, search will transfer from being an answer retrieval system to a knowledge retrieval system allowing people to understand the source of the answer rather than just having the answer, much like the maths teacher wanting to see your working out.

Moreover, AI in Finance will continue to evolve, providing more accurate risk assessments, personalized financial advice, and advanced fraud detection. Ethical AI practices and transparent algorithms will be at the forefront, ensuring AI systems are used responsibly. This includes the development of frameworks to address biases and ensure fair decision-making. Inevitably, given the world we live in for every person using AI for good there will be another person wanting to use it for bad. There will be a rise in malware, scamming emails and even creation of false or misleading media content. Despite advances in machine recognition of fakes as models get more realistic it will get more difficult to identify fake material.

However, as the media creation segment gets more advanced expect markets to appear for generated material. For example, music creation apps like Suno are now high enough quality to be used to create royalty free background music for phone systems and similar things. We may even see custom news programs with an AI generated photorealistic newsreader capable of reading custom gathered news stories as an app on your smart TV. ?Licenced facsimiles of famous people will be available in apps to send greeting to friends and relatives.

Hardware

There is a strong chance that nVidias stranglehold on AI chips may weaken slightly as other companies such as Amazon and Meta develop their own chips and other types of LLM customisation, training and optimisation. End user devices whether computers, phones or even smart home devices will incorporate NPUs capable of running small AI models locally.

Not quite sure what will happen to Intel given the recent removal of the CEO and being dropped from the DOW. Although the x86/x64 CPU architecture will carry on, there will be more take up for ARM architecture CPUs and the more efficient processing which offers longer battery life. There is a chance that a micro system reminiscent of the Intel NUC based around the low powered ARM systems may find their way into homes to be able to act as local AI models to provide a ‘brain’ for Smart Homes, possibly directly connected to the home router.

Much has been written this year about robotics and in particular the humanoid robots that have broken cover in the last few months of the year. However, given advances in other countries around the world this doesn’t seem like a market that will necessarily be led by the US. Expect to see a range of these devices appear from China in various sizes and capabilities. As an aside for robotics, it is worth noting that nVidia has released the Jetson computer that is specifically designed for use with robotics development.

Companies

Adobe are focusing on enhancing their photography tools with new AI-powered features. For example, Lightroom will include a Generative Remove tool to seamlessly remove unwanted objects from backgrounds, and Photoshop will have automatic Distraction Removal.

Image, sound and video creation and manipulation will allow anyone with an idea to create it in reality. It will become easier to use software as you will tell a spreadsheet what you want it to do with your data and it will find the best way to do it. In theory everything should become smarter, from light bulbs to traffic lights. Cars will become smarter, with true self driving probably starting to appear in China. As Language Models get distilled and become more compact combining this with personal computer systems that include dedicated NPUs researchers, particularly in medical and pharma fields will research times shrinking.

The upgrade of personal assistants like Alexa and Siri to incorporate AI will lead to homes and in some cases offices becoming more interactive and providing a range of services that we would normally use our smartphones for, anything from 'what can I make for dinner, I have these ingredients in my fridge?' to 'I have a bucket list of places I want to visit, when are the best times of year to visit Iceland or Hokkaido or Shenzen?'. These queries would result in a series of questions allowing you to focus your thoughts and assist you in making decisions.

In an ideal world it would be nice to see some form of AI based interoperability, Microsoft has talked up the idea of an Agentic OS, perhaps the first step to this would be software developers adding some kind of universal data function file to their SDKs so that CoPilot can be aware of the total functionality of all the applications on a system. In theory this would allow integration with social media, communication, smart devices and more.

The Bad

There is always a bad and there are two major things, the first is bad people. Obviously as it is so easy to create things for good, faster, better looking, more believable it is just as easy to create things for nefarious purposes. The other is the use of bad or biased data, many data sources such as Reddit or Facebook Groups are frequented and compiled by fans. An AMD forum is going to sing the praises of AMD while downplaying Intel or Qualcomm, and we all know how passionate Apple users and Vegans can get.

The Issues

One other thing that could have been put in the bad section is just how much of a change we are about to undergo actually is for years we have used a mouse and keyboard to control our computer, now we have to think about being able to talk to, to ask our computers things. We have also become so used to searching us Google that 'to Google' is now synonymous with search. It is a set of complex differences, you don't have to organise your search query so carefully, you dont receive a list of links to go and look through. Obviously has been Google's cash engine for years and they have defended it to the end of days, although in the latter parts of 2024 several countries around the world started taking Google to task over their seemingly monopolistic practices. It is a massive change for many people, strangely though the two ends of the age spectrum are likely to find the change easier.

The changes with vehicles are also going to be dramatic, up till now we have varying claims of autonomy from things like lane departure warnings to Tesla's Full Self Driving mode - FSD is a bit of a misnomer as it is really not capable of totally unattended driving and recently published figures back this up. Many people don't like the thought of handing over control of their vehicle to a computer.The future of autonomous transport will definitely require a mindset change for most people

As the speed of change increases rapidly we face challenges keeping up not least of which is in education, it takes years to modify the curriculum to cover new concepts and technologies. Although it is probably possible to use AI to make self paced learning explaining the basics of how new things work.

One Last Thing

The whole geopolitical thing, regardless of what Trump and or Musk think, thanks to Open Source the AI cat is out of the bag, no-one can say France can't have it, China can't have it. The data to make an LLM is freely accessible, the papers that explain how it works and what it does are all there too - every country that wants an LLM can create one, or use and modify one of the freely available open source ones. Thanks to the internet I can sit here in the UK create a video using server in Shenzen, China based on an image created using an SLM from France running locally on my laptop and then set it to music created with an app running on a server in Massachusetts. China excels globally in STEM subjects and publishes almost twice as many papers on AI as the USA does.
