Here Are 9 Shortcuts to Mastery In Anything!

“Wait, Mike, at a glance…these aren’t shortcuts…it looks more like work to me! Do you have any other ideas?” (I hear that all the time from my clients :)

Yes, I do … and here they are...a bite at a time!

I guess I’ll be the bearer of bad news with good intention here. 

First, I disagree with the Websters Dictionary! Just because the word “Success” comes before the word “Work” in the dictionary … that doesn’t make it true now…does it?

Nope…it doesn’t! First comes... real ['work'] combined with a formula to achieve any level of ['success!'] I think Webster had good intentions too. Or maybe some of us didn't quite get it. Back in the day, who wasn't looking for shortcuts? And today? With technology, we want them even more!

The 9-Shortcuts Backstory

For the first 6 years of my over 41 years in sales, business, speaking, training, coaching (and whatever else in between) … I finally realized that there were no shortcuts … just shortages in my bank account and my levels of maturity. 

I had the cars, my own restaurants and comedy club (I even had Jay Leno in my club), I had the work ethic and even the PASSION to be, do and have more. And geez Louise … not a glimmer of “real” success of any true measure.

I’ll be nice to myself and admit that the comedy was a “hit” … heck, we took the pit of a city and made it nationally recognized. My brother and I started an event called “The Taste Of Charleston” during their “Regatta Weekend” and we were even mentioned on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson! 

Johnny was interviewing Leno as normal and asked… “Jay, I know you travel to a lot of different clubs, can you tell us what the worst place was you ever played?” Jay says...without hesitation, “this place in Charleston, West Virginia, Mr. B’s or Michael B’s. Johnny, this had to be by far the worst place I’ve been to in my career!” (Our place was called Michael B’s Deli Company...me on the right with the beard)

 I was not happy and yet... good, bad, or ugly...I was mentioned on national TV!! After I thought about it...I was elated. I mean the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson? Are you kidding? Who gives a poop what Leno said? My phone rang off the hook from my high school friends…’ Hey Husson, did you see that on Carson?’ Sulking with a big smile… I said … “I did!”

At any rate, I digress, but here’s the point. I was young, immature, full of energy and hope. However, I soon found out that “hope” was not the best strategy. To my peril, if I kept neglecting the 9 Key Points I soon learned and will be sharing with you, that I would always be hoping for a better future…NOT HAPPENING!
